Lead Embedded Firmware Engineer
Eaton's Electrical Critical Power Solutions Division is currently seeking a Lead Embedded Firmware Engineer to join our team in Raleigh, NC. or Austin, TX. Relocation benefits and sponsorship will be provided within the United States only.
This position will be a hybrid office (3 days in-office, 2 days remote) role as long as you live within 50 miles of our Raleigh, NC.or Austin, TX. facility.
As a Lead Embedded Firmware Engineer, you will support our product development and design of our high-power three-phase UPS's, Energy Storage and medium voltage product lines. The role involves conceptualizing, developing and designing advanced real-time DSP algorithms for advanced power conversion applications as part of a global, dynamic, multi-disciplinary team. Our growing team is expanding our product portfolio with next-generation technologies, and we are looking for engineers with a passion to ensure that we make what matters to our customers work.
The expected annual salary range for this role is $99,749- $146,299 a year.

What you'll do:
- Lead a small engineering teams (1-3 people) in the development, test and release of embedded control firmware working with global cross-functional engineering team to launch new products including SiC three-phase UPS's, Lithium Ion energy storage systems for maintaining critical loads such as datacenters.
- Review product requirements and develop system control architecture, collaborate with system engineer to select topology and overall design for new products.
- Evaluate alternative control architecture solutions to meet customer and product development requirements factoring in cost, performance, and schedule.
- Establish system & sub-system level control requirements from functional specifications and application needs.
- Develop mathematical models and algorithms for advanced DSP controls of electronic power conversion products.
- Apply controls theory to design controllers to achieve target product performance.
- Develop simulations using MATLAB/Simulink simulation environment and verify control designs through simulations.
- Validate designs using Real time simulation systems such as OPAL-RT.
- Analyze, design and assist in testing/troubleshooting control system software used in uninterruptible power systems and other power quality products.
- Apply best engineering practices and decision making for advanced technical problem solving.
- Leverage your skill and experience by giving guidance and leadership to other technical project team members.
- Work with global product development teams to solve problems related to performance, functionality, safety, reliability, quality and component availability.
- Develop and optimize HDL code (e.g., VHDL/Verilog) for implementing digital control algorithms on FPGA.
- Perform synthesis, place-and-route, and timing closure using industry-standard FPGA toolchains (e.g., Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus).
- Support board-level bring-up and debugging of FPGA-based systems using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG debuggers.

Qualifications:
Required (Basic) Qualifications:
- BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an accredited institution with minimum 6 years of work experience in real-time Embedded software Development for power electronics (480V or higher) OR
- MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an accredited institution with minimum 3 years of work experience in real-time Embedded software Development for power electronics (480V or higher)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Design experience with power electronic products.
- Experience in embedded firmware development and programming in C/C++.
- Experience developing digital controls and algorithms for AC and DC power conversion.
- Experience using Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation.
- Experience with FPGA-based implementation of digital control algorithms and PWM modulation techniques.
- Familiarity with integrating FPGA designs with microcontrollers or DSPs in mixed-signal embedded systems.
- Ability to analyze and troubleshoot analog and digital control circuitry.
- Experience with real time operating systems (RTOS)
Skills:
- Strong understanding of analog & digital control theory along with digital filter designs.
- Extensive knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink tools including Control Toolbox, StateFlow, Optimization Verification & Filter Designs.
- Experience in design of closed loop control systems.
- Ability to simulate, analyze, and troubleshoot using HIL systems, preferably OPAL-RT.
- Knowledge of three phase electrical power systems
- Proficiency in HDL languages (VHDL, Verilog).
- Familiarity with industry-standard FPGA toolchains, including synthesis, simulation, and timing analysis tools (e.g., Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, ModelSim).
- Experience debugging FPGA designs using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG interfaces.
- Excellent verbal/ written communications.
- Position requires an individual who is self-motivated, self-managed, team-oriented, proactive, attentive to detail, task oriented, and able to overcome obstacles to meet schedule requirements.
- Work in lab environment around high voltage where safety awareness is critical.
