The expected annual salary range for this role is $112500.0 - $165000.0 a year.

Eaton Research Labs (ERL) is currently looking for an Engineering Specialist - DER Management to join our team in Golden CO. The primary role of this position is to lead R&D efforts on cutting edge technologies for Distributed Energy Resource (DER) and electric vehicle (EV) management, control and optimization at the distribution level, grid edge and behind-the-meters. Relocation assistance and future work visa sponsorship will be provided, if needed.

The ERL is a corporate R&D function within Eaton's Chief Technology Office, responsible for innovative and breakthrough technology development and commercialization for Eaton products and service solutions. This position will lead research and development in novel energy management, control and optimization methods to address modern power grid issues with ever growing DERs, EVs and smart loads. The Engineering Specialist will report to Global Technology Manager. The successful candidate will perform leading roles in technology projects and other activities, including strategic business unit discussions/alignment, fostering academic and utility partner collaboration, and representing Eaton in public occasions such as conferences and working groups.

In this role you will:

  • Lead complex global technology realization programs/projects utilizing our internal project execution processes, including design reviews and technical reviews.
  • Lead strategies for technology roadmaps for specific applications that are linked to and supportive of the overall ERL and business strategies.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert externally and internally. This includes leadership/active participation in external industry and technical groups, mentoring junior level staff and consulting internal business and engineering partners.
  • Create innovative power distribution and energy management solutions. Implement state-of-the-art concepts and solutions into quick prototypes, feasibility studies, specifications, and eventually into larger systems and product components.
  • Investigate, integrate, and validate new product designs abiding by time-based milestones. Engage multiple business stakeholders, cross-functional teams, National labs, universities, and utility customers.
  • Innovate, invent, and challenge state-of-art design and process by securing critical intellectual properties through patents and disclosures.

Qualifications:

Required Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in researching, developing and designing technology solutions. Demonstrated success in delivering high-quality technological innovations.
  • Demonstrated strong experience in one or more of the following areas: DER management algorithm and software development, DERMS, communication and data exchange protocols for power systems, and integration and control of DER/EV for grid services.
  • Exceptional Master graduates with 9+ years of experience will also be considered.
  • Must be able to relocate to Golden Colorado. Relocation assistance will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in real-time grid management (e.g. SCADA/EMS/ADMS/DERMS) solutions.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, C++, Java, and working experience with Github and Docker will be a plus.
  • Experience in implementing power systems communication protocols (e.g. Modbus/DNP3/IEC 61850/CAN/Ethernet/MQTT).
  • Experience with OpenFMB or similar power systems data framework will be a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to build new research programs by working collaboratively with others across a broad spectrum of disciplines to accomplish strategic goals.
  • Experience in some of the relevant areas such as demand response, energy storage, renewable energy, microgrid, buildings, and their integration to power grid operations.
  • Experience in advanced data analytics and machine/reinforcement learning to address the emerging R&D challenges in modern energy systems will be a plus.
