Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced and visionary Design Director to shape and direct the visual identity of The Wall Street Journal across all platforms.

The Design Director will collaborate closely with senior editors in the newsroom to conceptualize and execute visually beautiful and reader-centric designs across all our products. This position will be responsible for ensuring that our visual content aligns with our brand identity, engages our audience, and enhances the overall reader experience.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of design principles, experience in both print and digital news media, and a passion for creating compelling visual experiences.

You will:
  • Oversee all visual elements of our newspaper, website and apps, taking the lead on creative decisions and redesigns. Ensure all designs are of the highest quality, visually appealing, and user-friendly.
  • Work closely with our product and marketing departments to ensure consistency across all strands of our brand identity.
  • Collaborate with editorial teams, photographers, illustrators, and developers to create cohesive and impactful storytelling experiences across print and digital platforms.
  • Provide strategic direction and creative vision to the design team. Inspire and mentor designers to push the boundaries of creativity while maintaining brand consistency.

You have:
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in graphic design, with a focus on both print and digital media.
  • Proven experience in a leadership role, managing and influencing across multiple disciplines.
  • Expertise in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, color theory, and other design principles.
  • Experience with UX/UI design and knowledge of web and mobile design best practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to translate complex ideas into visually compelling and accessible designs.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

The position is based in New York.

Pay Range: $100,000 - $250,000
