Digital Ocean is seeking an experienced staff network engineer to join our infrastructure team, which focuses on edge and backbone engineering. You are expected to independently manage large-scale, organization-wide projects at the Staff Network Engineer level, demonstrating deep technical expertise and a broad understanding of organizational impacts. Your role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining our global network infrastructure, ensuring high scalability, system agility, and stability for our diverse customer base.

  • Lead and execute initiatives to enhance network processes, products, and services with minimal guidance, demonstrating a clear understanding of the technical and business implications.
  • Design scalable network architectures for edge computing and global backbone networks, optimizing for performance, reliability, and security.
  • Triage complex issues across multiple technologies, leading incident response, troubleshooting efforts, and detailed technical post-mortems to prevent future incidents.
  • Author, run, and improve runbooks, policies, and procedures, driving the adoption of monitoring standards and best practices across the team to mitigate technical debt.
  • Collaborate with other infrastructure and engineering teams to develop innovative solutions that meet evolving product and feature requirements while meeting customer performance expectations.

What We Expect From You:

  • Proven experience in building and troubleshooting large-scale data centers, global backbone, and edge networks.
  • Deep knowledge of Juniper hardware and Junos OS, layer-2 and -3 protocols (BGP, OSPF, VRRP, IS-IS), MPLS (including BGP-LU, RSVP-TE a plus), and peering/transit dynamics.
  • Strong understanding of overlay and underlay networking concepts, with experience in Ansible and Salt configuration management.
  • Proficiency in Linux and scripting languages (Python or similar) for network automation and configuration.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring mutual understanding and fostering collaborative problem-solving.
  • A track record of mentoring technical staff and driving work engagement, job satisfaction, and quality within the team.
  • A data-driven approach to decision making.

  • We reward our employees. The base salary range for this position is between $190,000 - $220,000 based on relevant years of experience and skills. The salary range for this role is specific to candidates located within the U.S. and will vary for candidates outside the U.S.. Employees may qualify for a bonus in addition to base salary; bonus amounts are determined based on company and individual performance.
