Purpose of the Role:

This role reports to the Technical Lab Manager and is part of the Science & Technology team within Diageo Global Technical. As a member of the Shanghai Technical team, recognized as the global center of excellence in Analytical and Technical insight at Diageo, this position primarily focuses on delivering analytical measurement and insight to protect product quality, improve manufacturing processes, and enable new products.

The role provides analytical insight to support Technical Equity management, investigate customer concerns, conduct technical due diligence, and consult on technical problem-solving across Diageo's portfolio. While its primary focus is on analytical chemistry, it also includes Packaging Material Testing as part of its broader responsibilities.

Extensive lab work using routine analytical equipment found in food science industry is required. The role supports developing new analytical methods in response to emerging risks. A proactive approach is essential for interpreting results to form action plans that assist production sites in root cause problem-solving, product manufacturing, improvement projects, and packaging evaluations.

Based at the Analytical Laboratory at the Shanghai R&D Technical Centre in China, this position requires effective communication with sites around APAC and occasional travel.

Key Accountabilities
  • COMPLIANCE. Operate and deliver processes that ensures the Health and Safety of our consumers, customers and employees. Work in a way that ensures compliance with our Diageo Code of Business conduct.
  • ANALYTICAL & PACKAGING: Flexible across analytical and packaging techniques, from interpretation to method development. Experience and expertise in operation and development of specialist analytical techniques.
  • RESULTS/INSIGHTS: Interpreting results. Understanding of results and Diageo production processes to influence improvement and problem solving.
  • SENSORY. Basic understanding of sensory, understand of how analysis links to quality. Ability to support sensory panels.
  • TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT. Maintain knowledge of new developments in analytical and packaging. Be pro-active in apply developments to solving business problems.
  • PROJECT DELIVERY. Ability to manage and deliver projects to deliver improvement and transformational benefits to the business.
  • OWNERSHIP. Ownership, pro-activity and judgement to drive solutions to completion.
  • TECHNICAL PROBLEM SOLVING. Apply technical knowledge and experience to lead solution to problems at production sites.
  • BUSINESS COMMUNICATION. Ability to build trusted relationships, communicate and influence effectively to drive the improvements suggested by the scientific data. Ability to use the scientific data to drive change in a business context (awareness of business benefits, risks and obstacles).


Entry Level Requirements - Capabilities, Skills & Experience:
  • Qualifications: As a minimum at entry level the jobholder should be degree qualified in science or equivalent. Alternatively, a minimum of 5 years' experience in an analytical or food science/packaging laboratory.
  • Industry Experience: Extensive experience in the production and testing of materials used for food and beverage.
  • Food Safety Expertise: Strong working knowledge of food hygiene standards, including HACCP principles.
  • Auditing Skills: Possession of a lead ISO9001 audit qualification and relevant auditing experience is advantageous.
  • Communication Abilities: Demonstrates clear thinking and effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Capable of influencing internal and external stakeholders through strong analytical and planning capabilities.
  • Customer Focused: Deep understanding of customer needs and business requirements, coupled with cultural awareness.
  • Professional Network: Maintains an active network in material science both within Diageo and externally to support the team as a Global Centre of Excellence.
