We operate Guinness packaging facilities at Marshalls Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Runcorn, in North West England, producing canned, bottled and kegged product for Ireland, UK and export markets. Significant investment is underway at both of these locations.

This role is site based at Diageo's east Belfast packaging facility is a 12-acre site running a 24/7 operation and is supplied with beer from St James Gate brought to the site in bulk tankers, which each hold up to 30,000 litres of beer. It has been operating for over 30 years, formerly as Irish Bonding and employs 150 direct staff. The site produces over 20 brands, including Guinness Draught, Extra Stout and Foreign Extra Stout, Harp, Hop House 13, Smithwick's and Rockshore.

About this role

This is a really exciting time for Belfast Packaging. In April 2022 we announced a £24.5million investment in our site, with the installation of a new canning line, which is nearing completion. We are in the process of delivering a significant increase in capacity, and as Performance Improvement Manager you will own identifying opportunities for improvement in processes, procedures and aways of working, and will be responsible for delivering against these. Key to success will be embedding the processes to drive resilience and delivering sustained world class performance across the site.

As a key member of the site leadership team, you will play a key role in coaching and mentoring our and will partner closely with our Area Managers to drive the improvement agenda. You will be a key influencer, and will work closely with the Manufacturing Excellence (ManEx) team. You will build relationships on site as well as across the wider Diageo ManEx network. You will continually push the boundaries for performance and be a leader in driving significant cost efficiency to drive action and delivery in alignment with the business plans. You will have a significant input in developing site strategy, and will play a key role in delivering against site targets.

Other key responsibilities include:
  • Deputising for Area Managers as needed
  • Leading loss & waste agenda provides data & performance insights and a clear strategy to prioritise improvements.
  • Own the waste reduction strategy for the site
  • Using the suite of ManEx tools, drive sustained site performance improvement
  • Developing and coaching the cultural change and get to Zero stops & Zero Waste
  • Facilitating and leading plant and process problem solving.
  • Leading strategic improvement projects using the DMAIC methodology. (eg 5Why, FT-DMAIC, Yellow Belt, Green Belt etc)


To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills and ability to communicate to all levels across the plant. Ability to engage and hold tension across a range of stakeholders
  • Strong technical capability
  • Strong coaching skills with the ability to develop and mentor staff across site
  • To be curious. Explore internal and external best practices, analyse opportunities and deliver against these
  • Be able to demonstrate strong delivery, and also lead others to deliver
  • Experience working in a process environment with evidence to demonstrate ability to develop effective working relationships with stakeholders and cross functional teams to deliver organisational effectiveness and improved business performance.
  • A proven track record of utilising manufacturing excellence tools and techniques
  • To have or be willing to work towards a NEBOSH and a qualification in Brewing & Distilling qualification however this is not crucial.
