Lead Director, Software Engineering - Commercial Claims

The Lead Director of Software Engineering is responsible for leading engineering teams that support the development, maintenance, and modernization of legacy systems-primarily IBM Mainframe platforms-used for commercial claims routing, adjudication, and operational reporting. This role ensures the reliability, scalability, and compliance of claims platforms, while partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver strategic outcomes aligned with enterprise goals.
🔹 Key Responsibilities
- Own engineering strategy and execution for commercial claims systems, including routing, adjudication, and operational reporting.
- Lead teams working on legacy platforms, with a focus on IBM Mainframe technologies (e.g., COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS), while welcoming transferable experience from other legacy environments.
- Collaborate with product, design, data, and business leaders in a "Five-in-a-Box" model to deliver integrated solutions.
- Drive modernization initiatives such as API enablement, data extraction, and selective migration to hybrid architectures.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal audit standards across claims workflows.
- Promote engineering excellence through structured change management, performance optimization, and automation.
- Manage vendor relationships and ensure seamless integration with external systems and services.
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with 5+ years in leadership roles.
- Experience with legacy platforms supporting high-volume, business-critical workflows; IBM Mainframe experience is a strong plus but not required.
- Proven experience managing large-scale adjudication systems and leading modernization efforts.
- Strong understanding of regulatory compliance in claims processing.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Familiarity with enterprise reporting platforms and data warehousing.
- Experience with Agile methodologies adapted for legacy environments.
- Leadership in matrixed organizations and cross-functional team management.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred.Pay Range
The typical pay range for this role is:$144,200.00 - $288,400.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
