DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Thermal and Fluid Systems Senior Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for Cummins, Inc. in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Investigate and Resolve Issues : Identify and analyze problems related to thermal and fluid sciences, understand their causes, recommend actions, and document results with guidance from experienced team members
  • Process Improvement : Apply and support the improvement of processes like Pre Program Planning (PPP), Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), or Value Package Change, (VPC), Engineering Standard Work, (ESW), Functional Excellence Practice (FEP) and tools related to thermal and fluid sciences to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration : Obtain input and negotiate with team members, technical managers, project leaders, and other stakeholders to support project decisions and provide insights for further analysis and design optimization.
  • Project Decision-Making : Make decisions on day-to-day project details, including conducting analysis, testing, and communicating with stakeholders to ensure successful project progression.
  • Problem Resolution Ownership : Own the resolution of moderately complex issues related to components, products, systems, or services, with increasing technical complexity as you gain experience.
  • Process and System Development : Execute established work processes and systems independently while developing your technology or product knowledge and engaging in system and process improvements.
  • Coordination and Direction : While direct management of people is minimal, you may coordinate and direct the work of technicians and temporary student employees.
  • Team Contribution : Contribute effectively to team goals, influence within your work group, and continue to develop proficiency in critical competency areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Applies Principles of Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer - Continuously study and stay updated on the latest research and advancements in fluid dynamics and heat transfer.Leverage computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and other modeling tools to simulate and analyze fluid and thermal systems.Conduct experiments to validate your models and predictions, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
  • Applies Principles of Thermodynamics and Energy Conversion Systems - Ensure a strong grasp of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and energy conversion principles.Combine insights from controls, modeling tools, and experimental techniques to optimize energy conversion systems.Look for opportunities to enhance the efficiency and performance of systems like IC engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, and batteries.
  • Product Problem Solving - Follow a structured problem-solving process to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.Base your solutions on robust data analysis to ensure they are well-founded and effective.Identify systemic issues and take proactive measures to prevent similar problems in the future.
  • System Requirements Engineering - Use appropriate methods to convert stakeholder requirements into clear, verifiable design specifications.Define and negotiate acceptance criteria to ensure the system meets all necessary requirements.Monitor the status of requirements throughout the project lifecycle and assess the impact of changes on scope, schedule, and resources.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
  • Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area. Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Proficiency writing MATLAB scripts and functions (1 year professional experience or 3 academic projects using MATLAB). Preferably with experience working with timeseries or recorded data (plotting, working with vectors/arrays/matrices, sorting and filtering data, statistical analysis).
  • At least light experience with Simulink (1 year professional experience or 1 academic project using Simulink).
  • Strong technical communication/presentation skills and creativity
  • Experience with vehicle On-board Diagnostics (OBD), software calibration, and Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing preferred
  • Experience with Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of automotive systems/powertrains would be a nice to have
  • Collaborating with internal and external teams for technical problem solving
  • Presenting technical proposals for calibration strategies to external customer

Compensation

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate's qualifications and experience, where appropriate.
