DESCRIPTION
This entry-level/early-career professional, product-focused position applies knowledge of engineering principles and design practices to create optimized design concepts and mechanical design specifications. The role considers application, cost, weight, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability. The Product Systems Design Engineer effectively communicates the capability of a design concept to meet cross-functional requirements, assesses alternative and competitive design concepts, and collaborates across disciplines to develop corporate and customer requirements, including those required to resolve product issues.

- Investigates Value Package Introduction (VPI) program team or field-based issues, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, and owns problem resolution from a design perspective while documenting results with guidance from more experienced team members.
- Applies and supports the execution of processes such as Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklist, Design Review, and tools such as iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, ANSYS Workbench required to enable high-quality component and subsystem-level design decision-making and refinement.
- Obtains input and negotiates with cross-functional and cross-discipline technical experts and senior-level designers to communicate the component and subsystem design intent through thorough Design Review packages.
- Supports design decision-making in areas such as concept selection, optimization, and design specifications impacting customers for Product Preceding Technology (PPT), VPI, or Value Package Change Request (VPCR) initiatives.
- Owns problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, or subsystems, with increasing technical complexity and ambiguity as experience is gained.
- Provides independent execution of established work processes and systems while developing technology or product knowledge and engaging in process improvements.
- Coordinates and directs work among technicians and/or temporary student employees.
- Contributes effectively to team goals, exhibits influence within a workgroup, and continues to develop proficiency in critical competency areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Experience:
- Entry-level/early-career professional.
- Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early-career professional in a relevant technical discipline.
- Knowledge of MS Office and CREO tools is also preferred.

- Mechanical Design Specification - Creates complete specifications, including solid models, configured engineering bill of materials, and detailed drawings adhering to national, international, industry, and Cummins' standards.
- Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis - Uses computational tools to predict product function performance.
- Product Platform Planning and Architecting - Develops holistic product platforms with key architectural features for future markets.
- Product Problem Solving - Uses structured problem-solving processes to resolve product issues effectively.
- System Requirements Engineering - Translates stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements and manages system requirements through the product lifecycle.
- Product Failure Mode Avoidance - Identifies potential failure modes and mitigates risks to improve product reliability.
