The Safety Specialist is responsible for providing guidance and support with daily safety objectives, including but not limited to OSHA compliance and safety performance. The position will be responsible for identifying training needs, facilitating training, as well as recommending and implementing policies and procedures to ensure awareness and compliance with all safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

• Ensure compliance with company, state, and federal OSHA regulations and standards.

• Facilitate in the creation of a positive safety culture and engagement of employees to support safety goals.

• Facilitate safety training to employees on programs, policies, and orientations.

• Audit lockout/tag-out procedures, confined space entry, personal protective equipment, and industrial equipment operations, as well as other required safety expectations.

• Guide and answer routine questions related to company safety policies and procedures.

• Ensure accurate reporting, recordkeeping, and documentation is generated to be used in reporting local activities to management and assist in the reporting for local, state, or federal agencies.

• Perform ongoing site inspections and audits, monitor employee safe work practices, identify/mitigate hazards, and follow up on near-miss incidents.

• Accident investigation and corrective action completion.

• Provide reports and analytics as needed through identified systems. Record and manage all local site safety documentation and provide weekly reports to management.

• Provide ideas, innovation, and suggestions for continuous improvement and opportunities.

• Assist with worker compensation claims and return to work programs.

Qualifications

• Bilingual required, Spanish / English

• Preferred OSHA 10/30-hour trainer certification and knowledge of OSHA/MSHA regulations and standards

• First Aid/CPR/Blood borne pathogens training and/or certification

• Traffic Control/Flagger trainer certification

• Proficient computer skills with MS Office software (Word, Excel, Power Point)

• Ability to handle confidential and sensitive material in a highly professional manner

Education/Experience

• Bachelor's Degree of occupational safety/health preferred or equivalent combinations of training and related experience

• At least 2 years of construction and/or industrial safety experience with knowledge of OSHA/MSHA regulations and standards

Work Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age or older

• Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check

• Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook

• Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required

• Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times

• Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary

• Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

• Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement essential corrective measures

• Solid training/teaching experience

• Must be knowledgeable of Workers' Compensation laws

• High ethical standards

• Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)

• Can utilize resources (people, funding, material, support, etc.) to get things done

• Must be able to orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously to accomplish a goal

• Be able to be a strong voice in bringing the company's slogan of Safety First, Always to the forefront

Physical Requirements

• Able to communicate with others by telephone and in person

• Able to utilize a computer for word processing, e-mail communication, and preparation of documents and presentations

• Intermittent climbing, bending, squatting, kneeling are required

• Periodic, but extensive walking and standing required

• Must also be able to drive a vehicle and walk uneven terrain

• May require periodically lifting objects up to 30 lbs

Work Environment

• Frequent exposure to extreme hot, cold and wet weather

• Works near moving mechanical parts
