Summary:
The Spanish Interpreter will provide patients, families, visitors, and staff access to employees who accurately interpret via face-to-face encounters during designated hours. Spanish Interpreters are bilingual and proficient in English and Spanish with the ability to interpret health care information to and from Spanish-speaking patients/patients' families and Medical Center health care providers. Will act as a language liaison between the patient, family, and staff in support of the medical plan of care. Facilitates acquisition of Interpreter services for non-Spanish languages (via OPI/over the phone, VRI/video remote interpreter and/or contract services).
Note: This position is PRN with varying hours, morning, evening, overnight, weekend, and holidays. Will require 4-6 weeks of in-person training at Fort Worth Medical Center.
Required Education & Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 1-2 years of experience working in a healthcare setting.
- Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
- Previous interpretation/translation experience (preferred).
- Ability to precisely and accurately translate critical medical information from English to the patient's native language.
- Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
- Ability to interact and communicate with people in-person and over the telephone, often in stressful situations.

Required Certification & Testing:
- Selected applicants must meet Spanish proficiency levels defined by Cook Children's Health Care System and measured by objective and nationally recognized oral language, reading, and writing tests prior to employment.
- All selected applicants are tested prior to an offer being made to determine their Spanish proficiency level, and must test at a proficient level to qualify. Testing will be administered by a contracted testing service. Spanish proficiency levels are verified as part of the employee's annual review.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Health Care Providers is required within 30 days of employment and must be maintained.
