Summary:

The cancer registrar ensures that complete and accurate data are collected and maintained for all patients diagnosed with and/or treated for cancer within the institution. All policies and procedures are set forth by the American College of Surgeons (ACOS), Texas Department of Health, and Cook Childrens Medical Center Cancer Committee. Responsibilities include but are not limited to abstracting eligible cases, preparing and coordinating case conference and like conferences, as well as quarterly cancer committee. This person is responsible for coordinating the quality review of abstracts entered into the registry and patient care evaluation studies. Responsibilities also include assisting with the annual report, conducting a variety of data analysis and reports, coordinate and prepare for survey from the American College of Surgeons and submit data mandated by Texas Department of Health and the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB). This position requires a background in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, data analysis and collection.

Education:

  • CTR required or comparable experience.
  • Experience with coding and abstracting preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and oncological disease process is essential.
  • Computer skills, essential.
  • LVN/RN, ART, or RRA preferred.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)
