What is the Role?

Motivated to lead, data driven, dedicated to developing educators, and passionate about 3rd through 5th grade education is what we’re seeking in our incoming Upper Elementary School Vice Principal. You are relational, you consider data in every aspect of your work, you take a learning stance, and model all of the above for fellow staff and teachers. A champion of school-wide systems and procedures, you are responsible for supporting teachers in achieving exceptional academic outcomes in ELA (English Language Arts). What’s equally important is that you infuse joy into your daily interactions with your team and scholars. The VP will be hired by and report to the Principal.

What You’ll Be Asked To Do

Curriculum, Assessment, and Student Achievement

  • Research, design, and/or supplement the academic curriculum for assigned grade level based on successful models and approaches
  • Align the academic curriculum with state standards, Coney Island Prep standards, and other scientifically-based benchmarks
  • Document and communicate scope and sequence for assigned grade level; monitor grade level progress against scope and sequence
  • Analyze school-wide and grade level data regularly in order to design responsive student interventions
  • Devise and monitor high-impact support plans for struggling students
  • Track other useful academic data (e.g. homework completion rates); inspiringly communicate progress to students, teachers and parents
  • Champion effective instructional data practices and assessments
  • Direct the interim assessment process to ensure that teachers are using data to drive instruction
  • Facilitate regular, meaningful interim assessment data debriefs with teachers
  • Support a culture of high academic and behavioral expectations

Coaching

  • Directly coach teachers to help them continuously improve on Coney Island Prep’s Teacher Observation Rubric
  • Observe lessons on a daily basis and provide on-going, specific, actionable, positive and constructive feedback that ensures teachers can translate feedback into improved instruction
  • Identify and write highest-leverage action steps for teachers
  • Effectively plan full units and individual lessons with teachers, guiding them through the entire backwards-planning process
  • Provide clear, actionable feedback to teachers on classroom management, lesson planning, and lesson implementation
  • Model outstanding instruction for teachers
  • Lead planning and internalization meetings for teachers to effectively prepare them for lesson implementation; lead data analysis sessions 
  • Complete formal teacher evaluations at mid year and end of year

School Leadership

  • Design and run high-quality professional development sessions that are based on student achievement and observation data
  • Work with each team member to set clear, measurable, outcome-oriented academic goals for the year and plan professional development opportunities around those goals
  • Reinforce the mission of the school with staff and inspire them to act on the mission daily; exude strategic urgency, excellence, and optimism; use the mission as a litmus test for school-based decisions and to provide focus when prioritizing what will have the greatest impact on students; instill staff with a feeling that they are contributing to something greater than themselves
  • Reflect on actions and adjust behavior and systems accordingly; ask for feedback regularly; model humility and admit mistakes; seek out thought partners
  • Partner with the Dean of Students to support efforts in character development and school culture to facilitate meetings with parents when discussing a student’s academic progress
  • Partner with families to support scholars in academic and social success
  • Participate in the selection process by conducting interviews for incoming teachers

What You’ll Need

  • Passion for education and a dedication to Coney Island Prep’s mission, beliefs, and values and its commitment to anti-racism 
  • Steadfast belief that all scholars can achieve at the highest academic levels and deserve an opportunity to succeed in the college and career of their choice
  • Bachelor's degree and NYS teaching certification required, Master’s degree preferred
  • At least six years of lead teaching experience; at least two years in a school leadership role either as Grade team Lead, Mentor Teacher, or in other coaching capacity 
  • Cultural competencies to work in low-income communities and a willingness to examine your beliefs and biases across lines of difference
  • Culturally responsive and age-appropriate conflict resolution skills
  • Proven organizational, oral, and written communication skills; timeliness; accuracy; and consistent and regular communication; and ability to meet deadlines
  • Reflective and open to feedback, with the ambition to develop your teaching craft; hunger and curiosity for learning
  • Self-awareness insofar as how the outputs of your work contribute to the school's success
  • A positive, solutions-oriented attitude and drive for excellence
  • Eagerness to work collaboratively with your school leadership team, teachers and the Academics Team 
  • A strong track record of building positive relationships with families, students and staff, while demonstrating a value toward diversity and inclusivity 
  • Extensive background in ELA (English Language Arts) in a 3rd-5th grade school environment; proven experience coaching teachers on this content
  • Experience with Wit & Wisdom/Amplify Reading/Quill a plus
  • Commitment to using data to drive your instructional coaching and teacher development

Coney Island Prep is a college preparatory public charter school in Brooklyn, New York. Merging growth, performance, and commitment, the Coney Island Prep community takes its responsibility to prepare scholars for the college and career of their choice very seriously, but not ourselves. Coney Island Prep currently serves over 1,300 scholars across its four schools, including:

  • 312 scholars in kindergarten – second grade at the lower elementary school
  • 336 scholars in third – fifth grade at the upper elementary school
  • 348 scholars in sixth – eighth grades at the middle school
  • 349 scholars in ninth-twelfth grade at the high school

Benefits and Compensation

  • Employees at Coney Island Prep are provided with salaries that are highly competitive, set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual’s skills and experiences relevant to the role. The salary range for this role is from $105,000-$110,000.
  • As a regular full time employee of Coney Island Prep, you will be eligible for benefits that include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as a 403(b) retirement benefit package with match and Paid Family Leave.
  • Staff are provided with a MacBook Air and access to all the necessary technology and resources needed to succeed in their role.
