This type of appointment is not approved to work more than 999 hours per year for all positions combined. Should incumbents work more than a total of 999 hours in a year the appointment may not continue beyond one year of service.

Accountabilities
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Counseling & Psychological Services, the Adjunct Counselor is responsible to work with a team of counselors to provide individual mental health therapy to students. The Adjunct Counselor is responsible for conducting intake counseling sessions and walk-in hour interventions. Additionally, the Adjunct Counselor will provide consultation to faculty and parents as well as help with administrative talks as needed.

Accountabilities

As Adjunct Mental Health Counselor, this position is primarily responsible for providing confidential counseling/psychological services to students as a member of the Counseling & Psychological Services team. Areas of focus include responsibility for:

  • effective provision of clinical services via individual therapy;
  • assessment of student mental health needs through clinical interview and symptom inventories, as needed;
  • appropriate and effective crisis assessment and response;
  • high quality treatment measured by overall improvement in symptoms and client self-report;
  • client satisfaction with treatment and timely response and provision of services;
  • expert consultation and information to other administrative staff, faculty, and parents;
  • confidentiality and maintenance of records in compliance with professional standards;
  • clinical services following ethical standards, and in compliance with state law;
  • continuity of care between on-campus and off-campus resources regarding individual student mental health care, coordination with office case management resources;
  • where appropriate, advocacy for student mental health needs;
  • as appropriate and needed within scope of C&PS services, facilitate group therapy offerings to college students.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Mental Health: Demonstrated expertise, experience, and academic credentials/certifications in mental health at the counselor level. Theory- based and practical expertise across a broad range of mental health issues (e.g. anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse). Commitment to affirming identity development in diverse populations (racial, gender, international, and sexual orientation). Demonstrated expertise in crisis management.

Counseling: Demonstrated expertise and counseling skills sufficient to provide psychological and counseling services focused on the needs of college students. Ability to direct, diagnose, and provide counseling as a generalist on a broad range of issues/problems.

Multicultural Knowledge / Intersectional Identities: Knowledge sufficient to effectively engage students on issues of diversity. Demonstrated ability to be a strong advocate for diversity with proven ability to work with diverse populations. Competent in conceptualization of intersectional identities within and outside of clinical work, to support students in the goals of identity development and thriving within the context of a small, private, residential, rural liberal arts college.

Requirements

Professional Experience/ Qualifications
  • Minimum of a master's degree in mental health counseling, social work, clinical/counseling psychology

Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensed in mental health service-delivery in NY
  • Experience counseling young adults, adolescents, or college populations
  • Commitment to social justice advocacy and diversity work
  • Interest or experience in working with diverse student populations
  • Interest or experience in leading group therapy
  • Interest or experience working with trauma survivors

Education
Minimum of a master's degree in mental health counseling, social work, clinical/counseling psychology
