Job Summary

The Senior Bridge Design Engineer is responsible for leading and mentoring Design Engineering staff in preparing and reviewing bridge designs, and technical specifications for replacement and rehabilitation of rail carrying structures.

Main Responsibilities

Bridge Design

• Serve in a lead technical role on railroad bridge design projects
• Undertake planning, creating, supervising, and coordinating designs
• Act as a resident expert in matters concerning structural analysis and rating
• Provide recommendations for the repair, strengthening, and replacement of bridges
• Work on projects that typically include steel plate girders, prestressed concrete, concrete box and steel pipe culverts as well as retaining walls
• Provide support on complex structural issues and coordinate multi-team resources during bridge-related emergencies

Project Management

• Oversee bridge design activities with in-house and external resources
• Provide Design Engineering staff with training and guidance
• Assist with environmental and regulatory submissions
• Coordinate project meetings with project stakeholders
• Lead projects ensuring timely completion and within budget
• Prepare and approve proposals for the engagement of consultants

Technical Specification and Standard Development

• Develop and update the technical specifications and tender document library to reflect current best practices and industry standards
• Develop standard bridge element designs for use on the system in alignment with American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA)
• Update the standard manual of practice and recommendations for bridge repair

Material Procurement

• Prepare tender documents, review submissions, and make recommendations to award procurement contracts
• Engage fabrication quality assurance services
• Update cost database for fabrication and supply of bridge components

Safety

• Communicate CN's safety policies and goals to Design Staff
• Prepare designs adapted with safety features to alleviate injury potential
• Maintain training in compliance with applicable policies and regulations

Working Conditions

The role is performed in a combination of office (90%) and outdoor environment (10%) in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires minimal travel (up to 10%) within Canada and the United States (U.S.). The role requires being available to respond to critical incidences. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Requirements

Experience

• Bridge and Railway Design
• Minimum 10 years of progressive experience designing and detailing railway transportation structures
• Experience mentoring junior Engineers
• Experience developing technical reports, design calculations, design plans, documents, client communication and technical memoranda
• Experience with structural design and analysis software

Education/Certification/Designation

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng/ P.E.)
• Valid Driver's License
• Master's in Structural Engineering
• U.S. Licensed Structural Engineer
Any designation for these above would be considered an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge

• Knowledge of railway bridge engineering, AREMA Guidelines and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) design guidelines for highway bridges
• Knowledge of railway bridge analysis, design, and rating principles and procedures
• Knowledge of "Working Stress Method" for railway bridges design
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and Systems, Applications and Products (SAP)
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements and railway operating practices
