Job Summary

A Bridges & Structures Carpenter performs all types of construction type work, from timber construction to concrete pouring. The Carpenter's tasks will vary dependent on each project.

  • Constructing, installing, maintaining and repairing structures.
  • Reading/interpreting blueprints and drawings.
  • Other tasks such as pouring concrete, timber construction, culvert installation
  • Providing material estimates for certain portions of repairs and projects.
  • Following company policies and procedures including safe work practices.
  • Use various common and specialized hand and power tools
  • Prepare and carry out minor maintenance of tools for assigned work
  • Remove and replace defective bridge, culvert, and other structural components


Working Conditions:


  • The role is performed in an outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions and is a safety-sensitive environment with heavy moving equipment and noisy surroundings
  • The role must be capable of working in various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • The role requires frequent travel (80%) that requires work away from home for extended periods to Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario
  • The role requires the ability to lift from 50 to 85 lbs as well as to climb and work at height using fall protection equipment
  • May be required to work with respirator and hearing protection.



Requirements:


  • Good knowledge of Standard Plans and SPC's
  • Ability to layout and perform all related work involved with the maintenance, construction and repair of structures, concrete, framing and finishing.
  • Ability to read and understand detailed drawings for various types of repair work and prepare material orders.
  • Safety conscious and capable of ensuring a safe working environment at all times.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
  • Proficiency in oral and written communications (English/French per location)
  • Valid Interprovincial Journeyperson Carpenter ticket an asset
  • Ability to provide material estimates and maintain inventory of tools required to do the job

Training

Newly hired Bridges & Structures Carpenters participate in a comprehensive paid training program at CN Campus (Winnipeg, MB). Expenses related to transportation, accommodation and meals while at Campus are covered by CN.
Successful completion of the entire training program, including written exams, physical assessments and field training, is required to work as a Bridges & Structures Carpenter.



Successful Candidate Process:


  • Medical assessment (including drug, hearing, and vision).
  • Criminal background check
  • Offer Letter


Paid Training Structure

• Four weeks (4) at CN Campus (classroom training and exams)
This position is a unionized position. As such, pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.
