Position Summary

The Senior Nurse Manager is responsible for aspects pertaining to operational activities and program management within a designated grouping of clinics or units on a 7-day/week, 24-hour basis in collaboration with the Nursing Executive Director. Provides input and is expected to meet budget, revenue and expense targets. Collaboratively works to ensure optimal delivery of care, as well as performance improvement initiatives, wither through direct involvement or by leading Performance Improvement team efforts. Actively participates with peers, subordinates and supervisors in constructive problem solving. Facilitates team building interactions with staff and establishes collaborative relationships with physicians and advanced practice providers.

Assures professional and regulatory standards are met and maintained.

Key Responsibilities include:

Program Planning and Goal Setting
  • Manage and implements departmental programs and goals that support the strategic plan for the organization and for patient care services
  • Support departmental implementation of new technologies, services and ongoing improvement.
  • Effectively communicate (written & oral) across the organization
  • Achieve annual department goals

Patient Care and Clinical Quality
  • Establish standards for patient care to assure patient care is timely, safe and effective
  • Assure satisfaction of patients, physicians and other customers with care and services that are delivered
  • Develop and foster collaborative relationships with other departments to support safe and high-quality patient care and services
  • Assure regulatory standards are met
  • Measure performance of staff to meet regulatory and patient care standards
  • Report results of ongoing quality metrics as appropriate and develop corrective action plans as indicated
  • Promote the utilization of evidence based practice in delivery of patient care
  • Support and facilitate critical thinking of staff
  • Monitors submission of TIPs (Tracking Information for Patient Safety) and oversees response and resolution.

Personnel and Human Resource Management
  • Recruit and maintain adequate numbers of competent staff to provide care and meet patient care standards
  • Facilitate the orientation of new staff and the continuing education of existing staff; Assure staff have current licenses, certifications and are competent to provide care
  • Promote professional development of all staff through mentoring, coaching and goal setting
  • Manage and lead staff to develop collaborative working relationships within department and with other departments as applicable
  • Collaborate with human resources to provide counseling or performance improvement of staff as needed
  • Assure maintenance of staffing plan for assigned units/clinics
  • Support and develop the staff to ensure availability to participate on teams (shared governance) at the unit and organizational level
  • Ensure provision of oversight and management of temporary (registry/traveler/float) staff that may be assigned to department(s)

Fiscal Accountability
  • Develop annual budget for assigned department(s)
  • Monitor variances from budget on a periodic basis and submit justifications as indicated
  • Collaborate with others to identify capital equipment and project needs on an annual basis
  • Develop staffing plan and reviews annually for revisions for submission for approval.
  • Submit required documents for purchasing equipment, supplies, and repairs
  • Collaborate with others in the development of ROI for new programs or services
  • Advance goals that support the strategic plan for the organization

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing and
  • As of January 1, 2020 must be enrolled in Master's Program and must obtain within 3 years of hire or transfer date.)
  • 3 years of experience in area of expertise relevant to the department and effective 6/1/2020 a minimum of one-year leadership experience.
  • Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple projects while maintaining positive customer relations.
  • Excellent oral/written communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong problem resolution skills to recognize and investigate unusual occurrences and results.
  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of relational competencies and serve as professional role model for staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish a long-term vision and inspire others to engage.
  • Demonstrate delegation and coaching skills.
  • Knowledge of word and excel. Strong electronic health record navigation skills.

Required Certification/Licensure:
  • California RN License (must obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • As of June 1, 2020, National Certification from approved list in area of expertise or leadership certification (must obtain within two years of hire of transfer date into position).

Preferred education experience and skills:
  • Master of Science in Nursing or equivalent MBA, MHA, MN
  • 2 years leadership experience
