Position Summary

The Research Project Manager assists investigators in the Department of Pathology and their collaborators in developing, coordinating, and facilitating activities for the Departmental research efforts, including the organization of manpower efforts, development of program structure, use of the Research Pathology Services Core, and financial administration.

The position will be the primary liaison between the research investigators who develop research studies and institutional research finance, research administration, and Project Managers of collaborators to create research plans, IRB protocols, applications for funding, and progress reports to sponsors. The Research Project Manager will be accountable for assisting in development of research studies by the investigators, overseeing the operational management, and tracking the performance and timelines of each project. The position will partner with the responsible investigator, Project Director, and Administrator and be responsible for the semi-annual and annual reporting requirements for the project. This position requires a substantial amount of experience with research funding mechanisms and requirements, a degree of independence, and ability to make sound professional decisions. This job also requires high organizational skills, self-motivation, creativity, and meticulous documentation.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Help form working groups to determine and support details of collaborative interactions between and among proposed scientific programs.
  • Help Pathology faculty identify needed currently available resources and determine sources of additional resources that may be required in order to meet scientific milestones and expectations.
  • Provide assistance in creating responses to requests-for-proposals, matching ideas to criteria for applying for awards, and developing processes for efficient submission of high-quality applications. In addition, review the selection, awarding, program reporting, and success, or lack thereof, in obtaining subsequent funding to educate faculty on improving their likelihood of success from investment of their time.
  • Schedule all meetings for and between working groups, internal and external advisory committees, as well as for the Principal Investigator and collaborating investigators, Administrator, Program Leaders, and Disease Team members.
  • Provide periodic updates to the Pathology Department Chair regarding the progress of the working groups and other preparatory work for grant submission, including identification of missing resources.
  • Keep detailed minutes of all meetings and transcribe them in a reasonable amount of time for review. Attend Disease Team meetings and monitor progress of applications. Keeps a timeline and provide reminders for all relevant deadline dates. Be available to travel to other local and occasionally regional sites to establish and promote possible interactions with external centers.
  • Provide service in a manner consistent with his/her specific role and functions according to COH policies and procedures. Possess excellent writing skills in order to assist with abstract/manuscript/grant preparations and submissions.
  • Maintain current knowledge and awareness of organizational and regulatory standards, policies and procedures relevant to the
  • Participate in a collaborative, empowered work environment as demonstrated through teamwork. Effectively communicate with all relevant parties within the institution in order to meet COH organizational goals.
  • Advance knowledge and skills as required for the continuing success of the Clinical Trial Specimen Qualification Laboratory (CTSQL), also known as the Shapiro Lab. Participate in determining strategy and tactics for CTSQL growth, coordinate with investigators on inquiries for service by the facility, and follow-up with potential clients.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility by appropriate and timely use of organizational resources, resource budgeting, and fiscal discipline.
  • Actively participate in performance improvement activities through data collection and/or participation in corrective action plans when needed to improve continuously the program goals and activities.
  • Possess interpersonal communication skills and address all personnel, including patients, visitors, and colleagues regardless of level in the organization, in a pleasant and respectful manner.
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • Master's degree in life sciences
  • Five or more years of experience in a healthcare research setting including experience in budget development, grant applications, grants management, space management, and/or personnel management.
  • At least three years' experience in a scientific laboratory.
Preferred education experience and skills:
  • PhD preferred
  • Current knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendments (CLIA) of CMS and the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Familiarity with FDA requirements would also be helpful.
  • Success in obtaining peer-reviewed funding for research
