Position Summary

The Director, Stakeholder Communications, provides the strategic direction and implementation of external communications and public relations initiatives for City of Hope key client/stakeholder groups, including Beckman Research Institute, the Arthur Riggs Diabetes and Metabolism Research Institute, the Medical Foundation, the National Medical Center, the Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences, the Office of Philanthropy, Research and Development and other clinical, scientific and business support service groups. The Director oversees design and implementation of all external communications programs and initiatives to enable the client/stakeholder groups to achieve their strategic objectives.

This position reports to the Executive Director of Enterprise Stakeholder Communications and has internal accountability to the leadership teams for the relevant stakeholder groups. This position is also charged with managing ongoing integration among the Marketing & Communications and Internal Communications teams.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Create compelling, creative and integrated external communications campaigns from beginning to end that have impact and leverage storytelling content that support and advance scientific exchange, excellence in comprehensive cancer care, philanthropic events or other initiatives to help increase perception of City of Hope.
  • Establish strategic direction for all programs supporting that support achievement of the strategic business goals of the client/stakeholder groups, including messaging, leader visibility and thought leadership, publications and other communications produced on behalf of the client groups.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, budget for, and evaluate the impact of all client group communications programs. Define and measure success metrics and monitor change progress and communication effectiveness. Develop, track and maintain detailed communication project plans and timelines to ensure successful delivery of communications campaigns.
  • Partner with strategic communications leadership, as well as media specialists and content team, to proactively determine channel strategy for key story priorities. Support the development of creative, integrated communications content that is distributed on appropriate channels in traditional, social and digital media.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders across the organization in order to become a trusted partner. Provide the methods and guidance to enable informed decision-making for external communication strategies.
  • Anticipate opportunities and client group leaders' needs, and assist appropriate members of the organization in the development and implementation of special communication plans and vehicles as the needs arise.
  • Select and direct external consultants as appropriate, and implement programs that have measurable and sustainable outcomes.
  • Develop and establish serviced-oriented, client-based processes that are cost effective and ensure timely, efficient and effective programs
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Must have at least 7 years experience in all aspects of communications, including seven years in the health care arena.
  • Must have experience in an academic medical center or nonprofit hospital.
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in a leadership capacity.

Preferred education experience and skills:
  • Proven writing, editorial and project management skills.
  • Ability to work well with senior leadership, creative staff, administrators and academic medical professionals.

  • Demonstrated skills in initiating, planning and operationalizing performance improvement.
