A Sr. Engineering Technician job is available with the Transportation & Public Works Department, Capital Delivery Division. The Sr. Engineering Technician will assist with construction materials testing and other related work. The candidate will performs more difficult and responsible sampling and testing of a variety of soils and construction materials in the field or laboratory; collects pavement core samples for evaluation of existing roadways and newly constructed pavements; operates nuclear and electronic instruments to determine relative compaction of soils; calibrates and adjusts instruments to compensate for changing conditions; records and reports test results after performing mathematical calculations, making graphical solutions and graphical representations. The candidate will also upload written records and reports of activities into the City of Fort Worth materials database system, and reviews test reports and service invoices from third party vendors.

The Sr. Engineering Technician job responsibilities include:
  • Collect and sample construction materials.
  • Perform laboratory and field tests according to City of Fort Worth, TX DOT, ASTM, and AASHTO testing standards on construction materials to ensure requirements are met.
  • Monitor sampling and quality control testing, and detect flaws in construction materials.
  • Perform routine field work in the areas of pavement coring and pavement evaluation testing of existing roadways.
  • Use computer and related software in order to prepare and maintain project records and reports.
  • Perform a variety of mathematical calculations in the field and laboratory.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory and field test equipment, and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Willingness to work weekends and overtime.


Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate's Degree in Engineering, Architecture or a related field
  • Five years of increasingly responsible technical engineering experience in the areas of construction materials testing
  • Valid Texas Driver's License


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Current National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) and/or American Concrete Institute (ACI) certificates in asphalt, concrete, and/or soils.
  • Current Nuclear Gauge Operators Certification issued by a recognized gauge manufacturer to utilize nuclear gauges.
