  • GENERAL SUMMARY

    <ul> <li> <div> <p><span>The Clinical Lab Scientist (Transfusion) is responsible for following established policies, procedures, and regulations. Performs/assists with various clinical laboratory test procedures and ensures proper maintenance and operation of instrumentation.&nbsp;Reports to the Department Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist.</span></p> </div> </li> </ul> </li> <li> <div><span><strong>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</strong></span></div> <ul> <li> <div><span>Works with Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist on a variety of laboratory projects.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Participates in PI, QA, and QC to ensure all regulatory requirements maintain an ‘in compliance’ status.&nbsp;</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Performs Transfusion Service laboratory testing protocols to support Surgery, Trauma, ECMO, Neonatology, Hematology/Oncology, Critical Care, and all other departments that require blood product transfusions and immunohematology testing.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Performs testing and prepares blood products to meet CAP, AABB, FDA and other regulatory requirements.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Prepares and modifies blood products for transfusion based on patient weight.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Prepares irradiated blood products per protocol using a blood irradiator.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Responds to Massive Transfusion Protocol activations and emergency transfusion situations.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Monitors/reports reagent and consumable inventory.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Rotates on-call coverage.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Functions in a charge or lead role as assigned for the days operations to ensure safe quality and efficient workflow, practices, staffing and operations.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Performs other duties as assigned.</span></div> </li> </ul> </li> <li> <div><span><strong>LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS</strong></span></div> <ul> <li> <div> <div><span>Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist in all disciplines by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).</span></div> </div> </li> </ul> </li> <li> <div><span><strong>MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS</strong></span></div> <ul> <li> <div><span>Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent and completion of clinical laboratory rotations.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing personnel and other clinicians relative to patient testing and information gathering.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Ability to resolve technical problems using standard guides and procedures. Analytical skills necessary in order to perform and interpret routine tests and recognize abnormal/critical test results.</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Must be able to determine the appropriate course of action for abnormal, atypical or critical test results. &nbsp;</span></div> </li> <li> <div><span>Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and other Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) software preferred.</span></div> </li> </ul> </li> <li> <div><span><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS</strong></span></div> <ul> <li> <div> <p><span>Laboratory service areas have work environments with frequent exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. 12-hour shifts (evenings/nights) 6:30pm - 7:00am



Rotating weekends and holidays, occasional on-call
