Managing Director, Employment and Benefits Counsel

We are recruiting for a Managing Director to lead our employment law group in Westlake, Texas. As a member of Schwab's Legal Services organization, you will report to the company's Managing Director and Chief Counsel for Finance, Securities and Corporate Governance, and will serve as a key partner with executive leadership and Human Resources (HR) on employment and benefit plan matters.

What you are good at:

As a strategic partner to the Head of HR, the HR organization and senior management, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing practical and solution-oriented legal advice to support the company's objectives;
  • Lead a team counseling on employment matters and legal requirements, policies and practices relating to workplace issues, recruiting, performance management, compensation, accommodation, leave and training;
  • Advising on employment agreements, compensation and incentive plans;
  • Supporting the company's litigation team on employment litigation and internal investigations;
  • Legal advice on health and welfare plans and related legal requirements, including under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Internal Revenue Code, ERISA, HIPAA and COBRA;
  • Review of agreements, forms, summary plan descriptions and other plan documents and employee communications;
  • Ongoing support for fiduciary matters, compliance and plan administration, dispute resolution, tax filings, and operational and compliance reviews and corrections;
  • Monitoring regulatory and legislative developments; and
  • Supporting M&A due diligence and integration.

What you have

  • JD from an accredited U.S. law school. Admission to and in good standing with the state bar of at least one U.S. state.
  • 15+ years of relevant experience counseling on employment matters and employee benefits plans.
  • Knowledge and experience with federal and state employment statutes, the ACA, Internal Revenue Code, ERISA, HIPAA and COBRA.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to collaborate across inter-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to make decisions, multi-task, prioritize, and follow through on numerous projects simultaneously.
  • Base Compensation: $225,000 - $320,000. Your compensation may be different. Talk with your Talent Advisor to learn more. In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or other incentive opportunities.
