Model Risk Oversight is a strategic function within the broader Corporate Risk Management umbrella providing oversight of a broad spectrum of models to create innovative products for our clients, and to prudently manage our financial risk using sophisticated quantitative approaches. The Model Risk Oversight team plays a key role in identifying, reviewing, and monitoring all models at the company.

We seek a quantitative manager to lead a team of five who are responsible for conducting validations of models used in cybersecurity, managed investing and investment advice processes and make additional contributions to the Model Risk Oversight program. The director will manage model governance activities across Schwab's investment management and advisor subsidiaries.

The role will be based in Lone Tree, CO or Southlake, TX. The job responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Performing and supervising model validations following guidelines based on SR 11-7, to include an assessment of model usage, documentation, conceptual soundness, data integrity, the control environment, and the software environment.
  • Performing and supervising the preparation of model validation reports as well as presentations to model owners and senior management.
  • Reviewing and approving model performance monitoring reports and model annual review reports.
  • Overseeing validation projects performed by direct and indirect individual contributors that also specialize in models used in cybersecurity, managed investing and investment advice processes.
  • Explaining and defending the outcomes of model governance activities to other internal review groups and regulatory agencies.
  • Representing Model Risk Oversight at business-line model working groups.

What you have

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in quantitative discipline.
  • 8+ years of work experience with model development or model validation.
  • Advanced skill with analytical tools, such as SAS, R, MATLAB, or Python.
  • Knowledge of SR 11-7 regulatory guidance and corresponding model governance requirements for banks.
  • 4+ years of experience as a people leader

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • CFA and/or PhD degree in a quantitative discipline.
  • Expertise in ML/AI and GenAI areas.
  • Model development or model validation experience in a regulated financial environment.
  • 4+ years of experience managing quantitative analysts.

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
