Director, Legal Counsel Trust
As a member of Schwab's Legal Department, you will be responsible for providing candid advice and comprehensive legal services. You will lead the legal support for the Personal Trust Businesses of Charles Schwab Trust Company (CSTC) and Charles Schwab Trust Company of Delaware (CSTCD) including regulatory support. The role provides trust document review and interpretation services, legal advice attendant to the onboarding and ongoing administration of trust relationships, including estate, gift and income tax issues, and other issues related to trust administration. The position supports the governance process for CSTC and CSTCD, including business level committees and regulatory examinations.

Key responsibilities:
- Provide legal counsel for Schwab's personal trust business.
- Review trust instruments for business acceptance and ongoing administration.
- Provide legal advice for new product development in the trust & estate and tax areas.
- Assist with state banking examinations and regulatory work.
- Deliver advice to chief fiduciary officer, president, and other leaders regarding risk
assessments and legal positioning.
What you have
Required Experience:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and state bar admission.
- 10 + years relevant experience in-house or in representing financial institutions regarding trust matters.
- Strong analytical skills and demonstrated judgment to evaluate risks, costs, and benefits.
- Provide timely, concise, and business-focused legal advice.
- Knowledge of applicable trust company and related laws.
- Proactively identify risks and recommend mitigation strategies, and advise on legal compliance, across all trust services.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
Preferred Experience:
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to collaborate with all levels of staff including senior management.
- Proven leadership strengths and experience managing diverse, high functioning teams.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Develop and drive comprehensive, long-term legal strategies balancing risk and business objectives.
- Mentor and develop a team of lawyers, including by prioritizing the team's workload, setting goals, and evaluating performance.
- Work cross-functionally with attorneys from other legal teams, and with business and compliance partners across the enterprise.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, respond to shifting requirements and business obstacles and achieve practical solutions.
