Telecom Technician 2

  • The Telecommunications Technician Skill Level 2 installs, configures, provisions, and tests, integrated and repair telecommunication network systems components in direct support of the government's mission. Telecommunications networks can include video, telephone core switching devices, peripheral devices, and PBXs. The supported networks include convergent networks which include both IP and legacy telecommunications networks. Analyzes telecommunications characteristics (e.g., traffic, connect time, transmission speeds, packet sizes and throughput) and recommends procurement, removals and modifications to network components. Conducts site surveys; plans installations, transitions and cutover of telecommunications components and capabilities. Installs hardware. Coordinates requirements with users and suppliers. Provides Tier 2 on-site and remote supports to telecommunications equipment.

The Level 2 Telecommunication Technician shall possess the following capabilities:

  • Develop plans for the installation or configuration of large-scale systems

  • Troubleshoot complex IP networks

  • Qualifications:

  • Minimum education and experience level: High School/GED with fourteen (14) years of experience providing technical support to the engineering and testing of complex software/hardware systems in the communications arena.

  • The following work experience is required: Hands-on experience with the installation, provisioning, maintenance, operation, and testing of five or more of the following equipment types: video, PBX, landline, GSM, GPRS, UMTS, LTE softswitch, SDH, ATM, routers, switches Network Management Systems; Hands-on experience with laboratory configuration and interconnectivity; Hands-on experience with network planning for telecommunications switches; Working knowledge of signaling protocols such as SS7, CCITT #5, and R2; Experience with telecommunications and network analysis, performance, and communications tools (for example: HP, W&G, Tekelec, Fireberd, and Nethawk); Experience with conducting integration and system level testing of telecommunications systems or platforms

  • Cisco Certified Network Associated certification (CCNA) or equivalent is required.

  • An Associate's degree in Engineering Technology may be substituted for 2 years of experience.
