We are looking for a Lead Engineer, Payments to join our Product and Engineering Team. As the technical lead for Carrot’s financial systems, you will focus on payments infrastructure and take ownership of building secure, scalable systems that move money reliably to members and customers worldwide. This is a highly visible, hands-on role where your work will directly improve access to fertility and family-forming care for people who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

As a foundational member of our financial engineering function, you’ll shape the long-term direction of our payments architecture. You will own technical outcomes, influence roadmaps, and collaborate across teams to deliver scalable solutions that meet evolving business needs. You thrive in fast-paced environments, take initiative in the face of ambiguity, and balance quick wins with long-term planning.

You’ll partner with Product, Finance, and other teams to design and build secure, resilient systems. Your work will include integrating external SaaS tools and building internal infrastructure that is accurate, compliant, and easy to maintain. While the focus is backend and systems architecture, this is a full-stack role. You should be confident in contributing across the stack, including APIs, frontend, and infrastructure.

This is also a people management role. You will lead and support a small team of engineers, providing regular feedback, coaching, and career development. You’ll foster a culture of trust, inclusion, and delivery while helping the team navigate ambiguity and align with business priorities.

The Team:

  • We are a fast-moving, adaptable, and highly collaborative group of skilled Engineers, Engineering leaders, Product leaders, and Designers, working with teams across the organization cross-functionally to enable cohesive solutions across the product and business.
  • Our engineers work closely with external vendors to move funds accurately and quickly to members, customers, and partners across global markets.
  • We aim to build systems that are scalable, transparent, and easy to evolve as Carrot’s offerings expand.
  • We favor a Lean approach to our product development, following the parts of agile that work best for us.
  • We’re empowered to make local decisions, reducing the overhead of getting things done.
  • We highly value having effective feedback mechanisms alongside empowerment to support continuous iterative improvements in all we do, to achieve better outcomes together.
  • We welcome new technologies and are constantly self-evaluating our tools to ensure they are solving our needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • You have 2+ years of experience in an engineering management capacity.
  • You have 2+ years of experience as a Staff or Lead-level engineer with full-stack responsibilities.
  • Experience in fintech, payments, or financial systems.
  • Strong technical skills across backend development, systems design, and vendor integration.
  • Experience integrating with SaaS-based financial tools or payment platforms (e.g. Stripe, Airwallex, Modern Treasury, Plaid).
  • You thrive in leading through complexity and ambiguity, adapting to emerging challenges and business demands, while thoughtfully but pragmatically considering tradeoffs to make informed decisions.
  • You understand that there is not a one-size-fits-all decision engine for how we build Carrot’s product. A blank canvas doesn’t scare you, and you are excited to contribute to products from the ground up.
  • You are comfortable interfacing across an organization, collaborating closely with various functions, and influencing the direction of solutions to meet goals.
  • You build strong relationships and trust among your team and cross-functionally to enable higher impact of the work you are doing together.
  • You understand that varying personalities and backgrounds will represent engineering competencies and principles in different ways.
  • You celebrate your team, and you find the time to provide feedback to your teammates, understanding the value of feedback.
  • You take pride in our mission: fertility care for all.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a startup environment or on lean teams where you’ve worn multiple hats.
  • Familiarity with accounting, ledgering, or reconciliation systems.
  • Experience working with international payments or multi-currency systems.

Compensation:

Carrot offers a holistic Total Rewards package designed to support our employees in all aspects of their life inside and outside of work, including health and wellness benefits, retirement savings plans, short- and long-term incentives, parental leave, family-forming assistance, and a competitive compensation package. The starting base salary for this position will range from $150,000.00 - $170,000.00. Actual compensation may vary from posted base salary depending on your confirmed job-related skills and experience.
