Senior Director, Design, Payments

And Capital One's digital Payments experiences are at the heart of the customer journey and the core of our Bank & Card lines of business. We are seeking a dynamic and established Sr. Director of Design to elevate the design quality of these experiences and accelerate Capital One's journey as an innovative leader in the digital payments space.

You will lead established design teams working on next-generation concepts for products such as virtual card numbers, digital wallets, Zelle, bill payments, money transfers, and payments authentication. You will operate as a strategic leader at the intersection of business, customer, and associate experiences to uncover and define compelling and forward-looking experience investments in partnership with product management, engineering, analytics, and marketing leaders. You will lead your team through developing experience insights, setting strategy, and rigorously refining UX/UI and content design to deliver on payments-related business objectives with world-class design quality.

As part of a broader design leadership team focused on customer engagement through onboarding, payments, and money management, you will play a key role in upleveling the team's design skillsets, developing business acumen, and shaping product strategy to best position our team to weave these experiences into the fabric of our ecosystem, as much as money is inextricably woven into the fabric of life.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead several design teams aligned with multiple business lines in shaping and executing on best-in-class digital payment experiences, setting goals, clearly communicating expectations, tracking progress, and providing meaningful guidance
  • Build a team operating model that emphasizes rigor in elevating design quality and mitigating operational risk in the design via continual critique and iterative refinement
  • Partner with business, technology, marketing, and analytics leaders and executives in the payments space to shape product strategy, communicating how experience design drives business results with compelling stories grounded in market intelligence, measurement, insights, and analysis
  • Influence senior and executive partners across the company to imagine the possibilities and connect dots on intersecting business agendas to elevate the product experience
  • Manage high-level internal and external stakeholder and partner relationships, effectively working with partners and teams across various teams & geographies
  • Embrace and advocate for experience mindsets with our teams and partners - this is as important to the work as the results
  • Lead cross-functional engagements with Experience Researchers, Strategists, and Operations team members on large-scale efforts, applying research findings to frame problems, define insights, and design new methodologies, practices, and experiences to serve customer & business needs
  • Manage and coach high-potential team leaders and associates, including actively crafting a vision for their roles and their success
  • Manage team resourcing and resiliently lead teams through change

Our ideal candidate will have the following experience and skills:

  • Deep experience in digital payments & payment authentication UX
  • Deep experience leading mid-sized design teams operating across UX/UI, strategy, content, and research skillsets from strategy and execution
  • Deep experience partnering with product, engineers, marketing, and analytics leaders and executives across multiple business lines to shape strategy, internally and with external partners and vendors
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in business case development in whitespace thinking - communicating analysis, customer trends, opportunity, and business impact grounded in insights
  • Experience in leading a portfolio of work across various business teams bringing emerging opportunities to market
  • Exceptional people management and development skills
  • Exceptional workshop and meeting facilitation skills
  • Fantastic interpersonal skills, with experience influencing senior decision making
  • Experience with working in design innovation environments

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or military experience
  • At least 12+ years professional experience in design

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years experience in a role leading Customer Experience or Product Design teams across UX/UI, strategy, content, and user experience research
  • 5+ years experience in digital payments
  • 5+ years leading mid-size design teams across multiple business lines

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $272,600 - $311,200 for Sr. Director, Design

San Francisco, California (Hybrid On-Site): $288,800 - $329,600 for Sr. Director, Design

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
