YOUR ROLE
JOB SUMMARY
Working closely with and reporting to the Associate Director, Major Gifts & Planned Giving, the Philanthropy Officer - Major Gifts is responsible for engaging a portfolio of current and prospective individual major gift and legacy giving donors. Through cultivation and stewardship of relationships, the successful candidate will utilize moves management techniques to deepen involvement and increase financial support for our work with children and families. This is an exciting role for someone who loves in-person meetings, is an excellent communicator and brings a sophisticated understanding of the philanthropic landscape in Metro Vancouver. The incumbent will build upon existing momentum at Canuck Place Children's Hospice.
We are seeking a candidate with experience working face-to-face with individuals and Foundations and can lead solicitations that are built on a clear understanding of donors' interests and values that align with those of Canuck Place. The Philanthropy Officer - Major Gifts thrives in donor meetings, writes compelling reports and proposals, and is a passionate solicitor of funds, interested in blended giving strategies that support major gifts and legacy giving growth.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages a portfolio of approximately 75 current and prospective donors and works with the Associate Director, Major Gifts and Legacy Giving to determine strategies and tactics to meet a portfolio goal of $500,000-$600,000 in revenue annually. Specifically, the incumbent identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards a varied donor portfolio. They are responsible for soliciting and stewarding significant gifts at the $10,000 to $100,000 level.
- Employs integrated fundraising strategies for major and planned gifts (donor advised funds, gifts of securities, bequests, trusts, and gifts of life insurance), offering these as opportunities for current and potential donors.
- Applies a disciplined moves management approach and customizes strategies for each relationship that encourages multi-year commitments and increased giving over time.
- Actively utilizes prospect research tools to identify new relationships and secures new or increased funding for Canuck Place.
- Writes strategic funding proposals based on short, intermediate, and long-term funding goals of the organization to reach or exceed annual revenue targets.
- Monitors and evaluates activity and results; identifies challenges and manages up where required, showing discretion and involving leadership as needed to support donor relationship management.
- Personally stewards a portfolio of donors and seeks opportunities for engagement, compelling reporting on the CPCH mission, and substantive tailored communications.
- Works collaboratively with a cross-functional team in major gits and legacy giving to plan and host engaging donor events. Identifies synergies with other fundraising teams such as communications, events, annual giving and donor services to support the collective goals of the organization.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- A related degree or diploma from a recognized educational institute or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Ideally 3 - 5 years or more of experience of progressive non-profit fundraising experience including experience working with an individual giving, major gifts or planned giving portfolio. This experience should include managing a major gifts portfolio, meeting revenue goals for the assigned portfolio and securing higher levels of revenue and engagement from existing and new donors where possible.
- Involvement with the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy, the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, Association of Fundraising Professionals, or CFRE accreditation (or working towards one are an asset).
- Bonus experience of interest is exposure to legacy giving stewardship and marketing and/or estate administration and working with blended giving strategies.

- Strong Microsoft Office Suite computer skills, and experience with Virtuous or similar donor CRM system. Exposure to and familiarity with remote work and planning software such as Trello, Slack and Teams would be an asset.
- Public presentation skills, both in person and virtually.
- Strong attention to detail (specifically with Excel, project timelines and database management).

Please note:
- Evidence of Health Canada approved vaccinations must be provided prior to your first day of work.
- Flexibility is necessary, as this position may require occasional weekend and evening work and travel within and outside Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
