Job Summary

Booking.com needs a seasoned and entrepreneurial Managing Director to lead the delivery of peace of mind to travellers and partners through Insurance & Protection products, tailored to their needs.

As one of the growth verticals house within the 'Trips Business Unit', the role of the team is to create world class ancillaries add-ons and services to be delivered alongside Booking.com's core offerings of Accommodation, Flights, Cars, Taxis, and Attractions. For Insurance & Protection specifically, these add-ons are in the field of managing the unexpected - whether that is cancellation, catastrophe, medical, through to flexibility, property damage, and customer satisfaction.

This is a sizeable book of business, with total premiums and revenues of nine figures. We currently cover nearly ten million travellers a year, along with millions of properties. This is not without its challenges, with high, double-digit growth ambitions that will take this to ten figure revenues. Continuing to build strong internal and external relationships (with partners and regulators alike), as well as technological innovation, will be key to success.

Leading a multi-disciplinary organisation of over 100 professionals, and an array of partnerships with Insurance giants and FinTech players; this role sits in the intersection of insurance, travel, and technology. Going beyond the 'white-label', the role requires a thought-leader willing to push the industry to new places. This encompasses traditional insurance products (e.g. Travel), alongside insurance-adjacent and new products such as No-Additional-Charge (NAC), guarantee, group policy and warranty offers.

Bringing deep commercial and cross-industry expertise alongside innovation, this role is fundamental to the growth and development of the vertical, and to Booking.com.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibility

Oversight of our Insurance & Protection commercial, compliance (covering financial and non-financial risks and regulatory requirements), tech, product, and operations teams, and of business partnerships with all other Booking.com functions (e.g. Finance, HR, Legal, Engineering), as well as external partnerships.

This role involves leading a management team of 8, and an organisation of 100, ensuring that they are engaged at work and developing their skills for the future, and creating a dynamic working environment that retains and nurtures talent

As a member of the Trips LT, support objectives for the Trips team and growth of new verticals by providing flexibility and protection products that give trust in booking not just Trips verticals like Attractions, Car rentals, Taxi's, Flights but also Accommodations. Represent the overall function where appropriate across the business with internal stakeholders, e.g. Fintech.

This role will involve growing our Insurance & Protection vertical, defining the strategy, designing and scaling new & existing product lines to address customer needs in balance with commercial ambitions. Your role will be developing and delivering customer-centric, winning strategies and products in different markets for different customer needs.

You will be accountable for the commercial leadership of our insurance products across different markets to drive customer satisfaction, volume and profit growth.

You will also be accountable for technological delivery. Overseeing the roadmap and appropriate prioritisation of activity across the vertical. This role is also required to negotiate with dependent teams, and horizontal functions, to safeguard timelines and growth.

You will also be accountable for operations, covering insurance claims and complaints directly, and indirectly through partnering with internal and external customer service organisations.

As a general manager, the role is not only accountable for commercial and technical delivery, but also for all 3 Lines of Defence. The Insurance compliance organisation reports directly into this role - and must design, build, and maintain appropriate oversight functions to ensure a balanced organisation.

This is a regulated position, as an entity director, it also qualifies as a policymaker (NL) and falls under the SM&CR (UK). This role also takes on US and Maltese positions, and involves direct contact with regulatory bodies all over the world.

Technical pricing, provisioning/reserving, and effective quantitative risk management is a growing topic for the business. Whilst experience in this area is not mandatory, it is highly desirable.

Building relationships across the globe is also key. Serving as the 'bridge' between the insurance industry and the non-insurance Booking.com business, partnerships are critical to the organisation, both long standing insurance players, and new upcoming fintech and insurtech players.

Act as a role model to the wider team through demonstrating excellent performance, behaviours, effectiveness, professionalism and ethics; in line with Booking.com's leadership expectations and mindsets.

Build strong relationships with the wider business and play an active role in the various steering committees and leadership teams in order to drive the Insurance agenda and to contribute to the overall success of Trips and B.com

Drive exceptional team performance through coaching, and defining and monitoring achievement of clear performance objectives through regular one to ones, and bi-annual reviews.

Key Skills

This is a regulated role - any offer will be contingent on obtaining the relevant regulatory approvals (including passing suitability and integrity screenings as required).

  • 12+ years experience within the insurance or financial services industry, or adjacent general management experience
  • Experience of P&L responsibility and management of sizeable organisations, including commercial innovation, pricing and negotiation is essential
  • Experience of commercial or speciality risk management, or insurance Managing General Agents is desirable
  • First class communication and stakeholder influencing skills
  • Strong multi-disciplinary insurance industry experience, ideally in regulated roles
  • Strong experience of Financial compliance organisational and process design, including regulatory communication
  • Strong experience of delivering in a technology firm, or technology focussed environment
  • Demonstrable data-driven experience and mindset
  • Leading multi-disciplinary teams and navigating a matrix organisation to achieve business goals
  • Ability to work in an entrepreneurial environment with moving targets and ambitions, balanced with ability to get hands-on with the work
  • Experience of working in or with multiple countries and cultures
