The team:

You'll join "Smart Benefits", a track of 12 data professionals based in Amsterdam. The track's mission is to optimize our accommodation discounting product to achieve growth for Booking.com.

"Smart Benefits" is part of the Pricing department that has a thriving data community, which is part of the wider Accommodations Business Unit. This is the largest business unit at Booking.com, so your work is going to impact millions of customers!

The role:

We are seeking a Data Scientist to join our ML / Insights team. This role will focus on generating actionable insights and providing tactical guidance to support our product development efforts. The ideal candidate will conduct extensive data exploration, develop and test hypotheses, and suggest product changes based on experimental results. You will collaborate closely with Machine Learning Scientists, Data Scientists and Product teams to enhance our understanding of the product's inner workings, identify key areas of focus on, and improve overall product strategy. This role requires strong statistical inference skills and the ability to translate data insights into practical recommendations as well as solid stakeholder management skills to achieve business impact through the generated recommendations.

Key Job Responsibilities and Duties

  • Leading the design and delivery of entire Data Science solutions based on business requirements, bringing them from the initial idea-generation phase to implementation independently. E.g.

    • Continuous exploration of product data to deliver actionable insights on how/where to develop the product next (product health throughout the funnel, feature exploration, etc.)
  • Working autonomously on consuming data, preparing it for data science use, translating business problems to data stories and solving them effectively by applying suitable statistical data analysis and modeling methods. Leverage input from business partners in all of the above to determine the right technical solutions to deliver customer value. E.g.

    • Design data collection mechanisms that are needed for product development
  • Designing and interpreting quantitative experiments to objectively guide key business decision making.
  • Responsible for collaborating with peers in related crafts (i.e. Machine Learning, (Data) Engineering), anticipating data needs to ensure smooth progress of their individual projects.
  • Responsible for contributing to the community of their area by supporting community projects aimed at making other data professionals more effective, actively participating in community strengthening activities (i.e. recruitment) and connecting with peers beyond their area.

Role qualifications and requirements

  • Experience solving real problems using data mining techniques and with statistical rigor
  • Strong skills in translating business problems into data problems
  • Strong knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of different types of data analysis and/or data science modelling
  • Experience in experimentation, statistical and hypothesis testing
  • Strong technical skills regarding data analysis, statistics and programming in python and pyspark
  • Working knowledge of data management (engineering, data pipelines, workflows) with pyspark / Snowflake
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal; the ability to clearly convey your message to different stakeholders.
  • Achieve impact as a team player, and maintain solid relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

The following skills are assets for this role:

  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Experience in new product development
  • Solid understanding of how Machine Learning models work
  • Strong knowledge of reporting/visualization techniques (e.g. Tableau, Grafana, Power BI, etc.)
  • Close collaboration with product teams (not just PMs, but directly with developers/engineers)
