We're seeking a future team member for the role of UK BANKING CONTROLLER to join our UK CONTROLLERS team. This role is located in MANCHESTER (hybrid).

Director level finance controller role which is responsible for all aspects of the UK domiciled banking entities and related companies. The role will maintain relationships with the board of directors', management committees, line of business management and regulators, providing advice on regulatory & accounting matters. The role will also be responsible for maintaining a robust control environment, provide governance & oversight of the outsourced groups which provide accounting and reporting services to the entities.

The role will also provide leadership and direction to a team of professionals that support the banking entities in the UK and also play a key role in influencing the groups that provide input and services to the entities in our control. Leadership in the rapidly changing environment will be critical to ensuring we have excellent staff engagement.

An in depth understanding of accounting standards (both local and US) and regulatory reporting requirements will be required to ensure the general ledger is complete, accurate and reflects the proper application of GAAP & Corporate Accounting Policies (CAP). The key stake holders will be the regulators and the external auditors and will require a close working relationship with the external auditors over the reporting cycle for both the US Group audit and local statutory audit.

A robust understanding of regulatory requirements is required to support both capital and liquidity regulatory reporting including identification and escalation of potential breaches. Work with Treasury and Risk provide insights into the capital and liquidity planning process and participate in the ICAAP & ILA working groups.

Work closely with the business and CFO teams to build the financial forecast for the entities and the impact new clients would have on the balance sheet, regulatory ratios and risks they may pose to the entity. Proactive insight into issues and opportunities and ensure the financial needs are met.

The role will represent Finance at the entity risk committees and other governance forums.

As the business and regulatory environment continues to evolve and change the role will need to ensure that the banking group is proactively managing the change and identifying the opportunities and threats.

In this role, you'll make an impact in the following ways:

Governance
  • Senior Legal Entity Controller for the UK banking entities and related companies
  • Interface with Decision Support Finance, Risk, Compliance and Legal function
  • Represent UK Controllers at board and committee meetings of the legal entities
  • Present legal entity financial information- principal focus will be statutory and regulatory reporting.
  • Monitor and review the control processes impacting their entities, ensuring they are fit for purpose
  • Provide oversight to the outsourced functions in Manchester and Chennai, including review of KPIs in conjunction with the UK Controls Manager.
Advisory
  • Legal entity restructurings/business developments/acquisitions/disposals (statutory/regulatory perspective)
  • Impact of regulatory reporting changes including ICAAPs, Pillar 3, ESG etc
  • Accounting impact of new business/products including the impact on regulatory capital
  • UK Controllers representative on projects impacting the UK banking entities and the wider UK Controllers function
  • Provision of guidance and implementation process for GAAP changes
  • Working with the Tax Group on tax issues impacting the banking entities including legal entity structures, transfer pricing and proposed transactions
Reporting
  • Review reporting; statutory accounts, Board packs, Rep letters, ICAAPs, regulatory returns, capital and liquidity
  • Co-ordination of the statutory accounts process for the banking entities acting as a senior point of contact for the external auditors.
  • Capital monitoring, including liaison with the Capital Controller within Corporate Treasury and UK regulatory reporting staff
  • Control and oversight of accounting flows, changes to processes, and reconciliations
  • SOX Compliance including co-ordination of management responses to SOX reports.
Policy
  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and CAP for US and local books
  • Work with Treasury to implement liquidity policies for Banking entities and related companies
  • Maintain compliance with Bank Accounts/bank mandate policies
Staff
  • Management of a team based in London and Manchester
  • Goal setting and regular performance appraisals
  • Development of staff and contributing to enhanced employee engagement

Core Competencies:
  • Qualified accountant with a number of years post qualification experience
  • Significant years of experience in the Financial Services industry particularly Banking
  • Significant Statutory and Regulatory reporting experience
  • Staff management
  • Experience of a fast moving, highly controlled, multi-national/functional organisation.
