We are seeking a future team member for the role of Research Analyst to join our investment team, carrying out research and analysis on environmental, social and governance (ESG) and sustainability matters. The role is located in Pune and sits within the BNY Mellon Investment Management capabilities in Responsible Investing. The role seeks a broad set of ESG skills but with a particular focus on climate change. This includes providing expert opinion on climate change themes and companies that relate to sector-specific research responsibilities.

In this role, you'll make an impact in the following ways:
  • Contribute to the wider research agenda set and managed by the Newton RI research team
  • Act as an RI advisor to a range of sustainable strategies
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of the process, products, environmental legislation and developments within carbon-intensive industries and sectors.
  • Contributing to the implementation of the firm's Net Zero commitment.
  • Support in the interpretation of carbon related data and reporting both at firm and strategy level, working closely with our RI data integration team
  • Providing expert views on sustainability and climate change related topics in internal and external forums.
  • Have a strong understanding of the strategic position of different industries within the global economy when it comes to recognition of climate change opportunities and challenges.
  • Organising and facilitating climate change related training and identifying emerging sustainability themes.
  • Actively contribute to Newton's global and regional internal investment meetings, the research recommendations, and strategic and economic frameworks.
  • Contribute from the stage of ideation to decision-making on sustainable investment which are suitable for the investment requirements of the house and helping to achieve clients' investment objectives.
  • Work with the RI Team to assist in influencing the companies in which Newton invests through active engagement on climate change, biodiversity, and environmental justice.
  • Contribute to the production of timely and well-written research and be responsive to research prioritisations to support the research and development of investment ideas.
  • Assist with ESG meetings with companies, contributing to the engagement objectives, production of meeting notes and opinions for circulation to the wider firm.
  • Support on proxy voting items relating to climate
  • Contribute to thought leadership within the space and have a genuine interest in evolving the debate around ESG issues.
  • Undertake research that is creative and imaginative and pushes boundaries.
  • Identify, research, analyse and write convincingly and coherently on salient ESG factors for distribution internally and publication externally.
  • Contribute to the evolution of Newton's approach to responsible and sustainable investment especially in the field of climate change.
  • Liaise with business development, marketing and other areas of the business as required.
To be successful in this role, we're seeking the following:
  • A strong understanding of sustainable investment discipline and ESG
  • A strong appreciation and understanding of decarbonisation challenges and green solutions/ opportunities that exist within listed companies, with prior relevant experience either from an investment perspective, corporate position or consulting background.
  • Passion for real world decarbonization through investments
  • Ability to translate climate change theory into practice - involves recognising material issues that might affect companies in the future and understanding how these could impact potential investment opportunities.
  • A strong appreciation for climate change challenges with the ability to think through what a progressive transition across industries and companies would look like and have the ability to make recommendations on investments based upon this.
  • Communicate convincingly and persuasively in writing and verbally to both internal and external clients with a desire to actively participate in discussions and investment meetings.
  • The ability to engage and interact at a policy level across the industry and use this to influence investments in a positive manner.
  • The right candidate will be practical, flexible, resilient and have a positive attitude.
  • He or she will demonstrate attributes such as self-starter, initiative taking, passion for excellence and strong team collaboration, interpersonal skills
