Economy & Government Reporter - Tokyo

We are seeking a resourceful and motivated reporter to join our Economy and Government team in Tokyo. You will be a key member of a team dedicated to bringing transparency to policy decisions and putting a spotlight on the powerful. We will expect you to write agenda-setting stories on Japan, a key US ally in Asia, reflecting its position as an important political and military player on the world stage. You will also get to document a historic moment as the Bank of Japan moves from massive stimulus to a more normal policy approach, a transition that will impact global markets.

We want a self-starter who will deliver scoops and spot trends before our competitors get to them. You will unpack the complexities of Japan's political developments, regional security developments and policy moves to deliver clear takeaways for our global audience. Beyond breaking news, you're able to produce thoughtful analysis that explains the significance of the day-to-day newsflow. You should also enjoy collaborating with colleagues and be able to network across our large, global newsroom. And we'll expect you to collaborate well with colleagues from around the world.

We'll trust you to:

  • Cover Japan from both a domestic and foreign policy perspective, including staying abreast of regional security developments
  • Work seamlessly with colleagues around the world to share intelligence and break news
  • Think creatively about ways to deliver content that appeals to a diverse audience

You'll need to have:

  • At least 5 years of business journalism experience
  • Sound news judgement and a track record of delivering scoops
  • A proven ability to build sources
  • A keen interest to uncover surprises and dig deep to learn about global markets, companies and economies
  • Knowledge of regional defense and security issues is a plus
  • Proficiency in both spoken and written English and Japanese
  • Demonstrated continuous career growth within an organization
