What Will You Do?
Bixal has an exciting opportunity for a Communications Advisor to join our team to support the USAID/West Africa Collaborating, Learning, & Adapting and Monitoring Platform (CLAMP) Activity. This role will be based full-time in Accra, Ghana. This position will report to the Chief of Party and will manage a team of part-time communications consultants.
 
The CLAMP Communications Advisor will be responsible for facilitating and implementing the project’s communication strategy, including developing a variety of communication products for internal U.S. government and external stakeholders. While developing and leading the execution of communications strategies, the Communications Advisor will bring the best technical practices and approaches to bear. This position will craft scopes for communication projects and set communications goals, ensuring buy-in across stakeholders. The Communications Advisor will lead a pool of communication consultants, such as editors, graphic designers, GIS specialists, multi-media editors, and event specialists to execute communications strategies, including the design, development, and dissemination of robust communications products, events, and campaigns. This position will set timelines, ensure they are upheld, and brief project staff and stakeholders on projects. This position will communicate directly with clients and collaborate closely with CLAMP technical advisors, ensuring alignment on scopes, vision, and timelines.

Responsibilities

  • Lead implementation of CLAMP Activity communication strategies, including leading the development and dissemination of robust communication products and campaigns while ensuring client alignment
  • Define communications project objectives, scope and deliverables
  • Manage the creation and/or create a wide range of communication products that effectively convey complex information and data, such as newsletters, reports, infographics, flyers, banners, briefings, one-pagers, and multimedia products (i.e. film)
  • Build communications standard operating procedures, processes, and team culture, including an environment of learning and improvement
  • Support the coordination and implementation of project events with CLAMP staff, working with events specialists and others to ensure events are planned, promoted, and managed in-line with the project’s overarching communication goals and strategies
  • Serve as project supervisor for communications consultants; manage the production of communications products, leading communication consultant or part-time Bixal copywriters, communications specialists, copyeditors, multi-media editors, graphic designers, GIS specialists, 508 compliance specialists, and others to create high-quality products produced on time
  • Ensure all materials, campaigns, and events are accessible, 508-compliant, and follow USAID branding standards
  • Monitor the engagement of communications products, campaigns, and events and identify improvements based on analytics
  • Work closely with clients, colleagues, and partners to ensure alignment on goals and products
  • Develop new processes as needed to support the communications team
  • Ensure proper staffing for projects and allocation tracking
  • Work with GIS specialists to communicate appropriate map data
  • Participate in client events and forums to positively represent the organization and develop and maintain relationships with the industry.
  • As appropriate, play an active role in new client acquisition by supporting business development initiatives to enhance and grow Bixal's business in each of the areas that it works.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.  

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 8 years of experience developing, managing and implementing communication strategies and campaigns; USAID communication management experience preferred.
  • Excellent project management skills – ability to create realistic timelines, keep part-time staff and consultants on track with work deadlines, and ensure appropriate and timely client reviews.
  • Professional working proficiency of French and English.
  • Experience leading a team of events specialists, graphic designers, GIS specialists, editors, 508 compliance specialists, and other communications-oriented consultants
  • Experience supporting the success of a range of events, from workshops consisting of less than 20 people to large conferences consisting of more than 200 people
  • Ability to engender a positive work culture and respect the growth and skills of teammates, knowledge of the culture and context in Ghana and West Africa.
  • Clear, consistent inter-personal communication skills, strong relationship building skills.
  • Ability to give constructive feedback
  • Excellent writing skills with an ability to write for a variety of contexts and content types
  • Ability to create communications strategies, define target audiences, and create and disseminate products tailored to those specific audiences
  • Experience identifying, tracking, and reviewing metrics and modifying tactics based on results
  • Ability to work well across cultures and languages
  • Ability to work with remote staff based in the US as well as staff in Ghana
  • Experience working with printers, event venues, and other third-party vendors

Nice to haves

  • Familiarity with USAID branding and marking standards
  • Experience supporting the hiring contract staff when needed
