About This Role

The Biologics Protein Biochemistry group at Biogen seeks an experienced and highly motivated scientist to contribute to our mission of developing medicines that transform patients' lives. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing, generating, and characterizing antibody-based therapeutics, including bispecifics and novel fusion proteins. This position requires strong technical expertise in protein purification and characterization and will involve a balance of hands-on lab work and management of external protein production efforts at Contract Research Organizations (CROs). The individual will collaborate closely with teams across Research to support candidate selection and lead optimization efforts that advance our therapeutic pipeline.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and optimize protein purification schemes for engineered antibodies using computer-interfaced chromatography systems (e.g., AKTA or similar) utilizing a various chromatographic techniques
  • Characterize proteins using biophysical and analytical methods including SEC-MALS, DLS, SDS-PAGE, and analytical SEC
  • Contribute to the design and engineering of bispecific antibodies and novel fusion proteins to achieve desired activity, binding specificity, and manufacturability
  • Manage all aspects of protein production activities at CRO
  • Actively contribute to project strategy and experimental design, and regularly present findings at team meetings
  • Document experimental work clearly and completely in electronic lab notebooks and technical reports

Who You Are

You're a hands-on protein biochemist with deep expertise in purification and biophysical characterization. In addition to performing benchwork yourself, you have experience overseeing protein production at CROs and bring strong operational and organizational skills to the table. You thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and are known for your clear communication and attention to detail.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry or a related field with 2-4 years industry experience, or a Master's degree with 4+ years relevant industry experience.
  • Extensive experience in protein purification, including method development across multiple chromatographic techniques (IEX, HIC, affinity)
  • Proficiency with automated purification systems (e.g., ÄKTA)
  • Strong analytical and biophysical skills, including DLS, SEC-MALS, SDS-PAGE, and SEC
  • Experience designing antibody-based formats such as bispecifics and fusion proteins
  • Track record of managing CRO relationships and external protein production
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and data presentation skills

Preferred Skills

  • Experience designing protein expression constructs at the DNA level
  • Experience with bioconjugation

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $122,000.00-$163,000.00

Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.
