About This Role:
Biogen is actively seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Associate I, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to join our team in Cambridge. In this role, you will be responsible for implementing our chemical hygiene practices to ensure a safe laboratory environment.  Your responsibilities will include laboratory safety, hazardous waste management, chemical inventory, training, emergency response, among others. As part of the EHS team, you will directly contribute to the safety and wellbeing of our Cambridge site employees and contractors, reflecting Biogen's commitment to excellence in all aspects of our operations.  This role is a full-time, on-site position requiring presence in Cambridge 5 days a week.

What You’ll Do:

  • Champion laboratory safety by providing proactive, hands-on EHS support.
  • Perform site management system responsibilities including: communication plan, training program, controlled documents, and digital systems.
  • Manage the hazardous waste and biowaste program, overseeing vendor relationships, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing disposal processes.
  • Maintain and implement the site's comprehensive emergency preparedness and response program, including drills and training.
  • Lead the chemical inventory program, ensuring accurate tracking, regulatory compliance, and safe storage practices.
  • Conduct thorough EHS reviews for new laboratory equipment and processes through the Management of Change program.
  • Deliver engaging EHS training programs via classroom and on-the-job sessions, fostering a culture of safety awareness and compliance.
  • Continuously review and update written EHS programs and procedures to guarantee regulatory compliance, enhance effectiveness, and promote best practices.
  • Assist with incident investigations, root cause analyses, and drive the implementation of effective corrective and preventative actions.
  • Cultivate strong partnerships with internal clients to effectively implement EHS programs and provide expert guidance and support.
  • Take part in emergency response activities, including on-call support.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Associate’s Degree in life sciences, environmental sciences, or a related field (required); Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in EHS, laboratory safety, or environmental compliance roles.
  • Strong knowledge of hazardous waste management regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering training materials for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to perform inspections, document findings, and implement corrective actions effectively.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and applying root cause analysis techniques.
  • Familiarity with sustainability initiatives and environmental stewardship practices.
  • Flexibility to participate in emergency response activities, including on-call support.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in a research and development laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of ergonomic assessments and best practices for laboratory settings.
  • Understanding of engineering or construction project safety requirements.

Additional Information

The base salary range for this position is $79,000 to $103,000. Base salary offered is determined though an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.  

Regular employees are eligible to receive both short term and long-term incentives, including cash bonus and equity incentive opportunities, designed to reward recent achievements and recognize your future potential based on individual, business unit and company performance.
