About This Role

Corporate Development leads the establishment of Biogen's corporate strategy and is responsible for the identification, assessment and negotiation of external opportunities to augment Biogen's pipeline, as well as integration of acquired companies and management of relationships with Biogen's partners.

Reporting to the Head of New Ventures, the New Ventures Senior Director will be leading the identification and evaluation of external growth opportunities to build an externalized portfolio of research and early clinical stage assets by utilizing alternative deal constructs to incubate and capture breakthrough innovation. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for managing and operationalizing assets in the externalized pipeline independently of Biogen infrastructure but aligned to Biogen's R&D principles and standards.

What You'll Do

  • Proactively survey the emerging scientific and technological landscape to identify the most impactful emerging areas of breakthrough innovation
  • Maintain networks with the VC and biotech community
  • Propose external pipeline investments, develop assessments, the scientific rationale, prosecution plans, and manage the opportunity until internalization into the Biogen portfolio.
  • Maintain close alignment with the Research and early Development organizations to track progress of the externalized programs and assess appropriate timing and triggers for transition into the internal pipeline
  • Develops highly complex assessments, scenarios, and recommendations for external opportunities
  • Lead focused cross-functional teams in the evaluation of opportunities with focus on the scientific and technical merit to advance (or exclude) opportunities. Integrates complex data sets and provides clear recommendations.
  • Create written summaries of evaluations in the form of memos and visual presentations and lead the focused cross functional team into governance discussions with senior leadership that frame the scientific and strategic importance of proposed opportunities of high risk and complexity

Who You Are

You are a team player with a demonstrated ability to deliver results in a timely manner and at the highest levels of excellence in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. You must have demonstrated experience in identifying and advancing innovative external opportunities, sourcing from Biotech, VC, and other avenues, and operationalizing seed/series A companies. You must maintain a strong network in the scientific/clinical and the biotech/VC community to identify opportunities to enhance and innovate Biogen's pipeline

Required Skills

  • 15+ years of experience in the biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical industry. PhD in the life sciences or related field
  • Experience in VC firms and/or formation and operationalizing seed/series A companies
  • Broad and comprehensive expertise in identifying and advancing innovative external opportunities, sourcing from Biotech, VC, and other avenues
  • Experience in forming and operationalizing seed/series A companies
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the biotech operating model, portfolio risk management and drug discovery/early development
  • Knowledge of multiple transaction types (e.g., equity, build to buy, option deals)
  • Broad and comprehensive experience of cross functional project leadership
  • Ability to operate with a high level of independence and guides others
  • Experience in leading highly visible multidisciplinary teams and projects. Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders to bring sound evaluations and recommendations forward to senior management
  • Experience presenting proposals of high risk and complexity to senior management and negotiating with senior management (EC and EC-1) and other senior stakeholders to influence decisions
  • Travel internationally 2-4 times per year

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $225,000.00-$310,000.00

Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.
