Principal Software Engineer, Platform Automation

Autodesk's Development Enablement organisation is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Software Engineer, Developer Platform Services, to design and develop intuitive and streamlined Continuous Integration (CI) solutions within the platform, serving a large and diverse internal developer community.

When successful in the role, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of CI. Leveraging and enhancing our best-in-class, highly scalable platform infrastructure, you will build abstracted and opinionated solutions that work across teams, ensuring a seamless and productive developer experience.
Responsibilities
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of the build and deploy needs of various product teams, the developer tooling ecosystem, interdependent systems, and security and compliance mandates within the company to design and build next-gen CI that is configurable within a standardised framework.
- Utilise -as-code principles, including pipeline-as-code, config-as-code, and infrastructure-as-code, backed by advanced automation, to engineer a unified framework that leverages template sets, shared components, and libraries to optimise CI processes, and integrates seamlessly into the large-scale Kubernetes-based CI infrastructure.
- Work closely within the team of brilliant engineers, the Technical Lead and assigned Architects, to develop together robust technical solutions that are highly scalable and resilient and work in multi-cloud environments.
- Empower developers with self-service capabilities to streamline their workflows, which allow for pipeline flexibility while adhering to compliance standards.
- Champion best practices and adoption across the large developer community with an effective strategy.
- Collaborate across teams to ensure solutions are user-centric, enhancing both the developer experience and overall system efficiency.
- Partner with Product Managers (PMs) and Technical Program Managers (TPMs) to drive the adoption of these solutions across the organisation, ensuring widespread utilisation and continuous improvement.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of hands-on experience in platform development or a similar role, with a strong focus on cloud services, advanced automation and container orchestration.
- Experience in transitioning from isolated automation systems to a set of modular and reusable templates, jobs, and standards that ensure consistent engineering practices across a large enterprise.
- Advanced automation and software development experience in Python / Go or equivalent.
- Proven ability to design and implement scalable infrastructure solutions, including a strong understanding of Kubernetes and containerization technologies.
- Extensive experience with CI/CD principles and best practices, familiarity with automation tools and frameworks used in CI/CD environments.
- Ability to drive standardised tooling by language using standards and defined build packs consisting of standard tools (e.g., build, test, etc.).
- Experience with -as-code principles (pipeline-as-code, config-as-code, infrastructure-as-code).
- Demonstrated ability to work in one or more of the major public cloud environments, such as AWS and Azure, with a specific focus on container orchestration services.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work with various stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in managing the software supply chain, including standardised scanning, testing tools, and Software Bill of Materials (SBOM).
- Experience in a leadership role within a DevOps or Platform Engineering team.
- Experience with self-service platform development for developers.
- Familiarity with the latest DevOps tools and technologies, such as CloudBees Jenkins Pipelines and templates, Tekton, GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Spinnaker, and observability tools such as Dynatrace and Faros.
- Advanced knowledge of application security and compliance standards, and ability to shift left in the pipeline.
- Proven track record of driving adoption and continuous improvement of CI/CD solutions across large organisations.
- Experience working in Agile with Product Managers (PMs) and Technical Program Managers (TPMs) to implement and scale solutions.
