Description
As a member of the Computational Materials Science team at Apple, you will help create the next generation of the world's finest consumer electronic devices. You will support the rapid advancement of alloys, coatings, and processes that are the building blocks of our products. This position will interface primarily with materials engineers on the Materials Product Design team as well as other FEA and ML based computational teams to advance and shape Apple's advanced materials. This position will directly support materials teams and lead materials modeling projects related to bulk materials and coatings. Responsibilities will include using first principles to propose and validate mechanisms driving complex materials behavior, and then developing the appropriate process-structure-property relationships that can be used by the Materials Engineering team to deliver innovative and robust substrate and coating solutions. The successful candidate must posses the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
- A strong understanding of physical metallurgy principles
- Experience running and developing material models, as well as managing external modeling vendors is essential.
- Strong computer coding skills; Python preferred
- Experience developing or applying materials and data modeling tools (for example: DFT, atomistics, phase field, CALPHAD, FEA, ML/AI) is desirable
- Flexibility and comfort working in a fast-paced environment
- PhD in Materials Science & Engineering
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical knowledge of pigments, dyes, resins, and other precursor materials
- Familiarity with color analysis and color modeling (reflectance curves, visual assessment of color)
- Experience working remotely with vendors
- Experience working on multiple products/coatings on different development timelines
- Track record of material selection and development for products with demanding performance requirements
