As Director, External Financial Reporting supporting our Finance Reporting & Accounting (FRA) team, you will report to the Head, External Financial Reporting and play an integral role in Alcon's reporting for the quarterly earnings cycle. In addition to working on select financial statement disclosures, you will own key areas including the quarterly cross-functional earnings calendar, Disclosure Review Committee ("DRC") Report for SOX 302, and the earnings per share model. You will collaborate closely with counterparts in the Technical Accounting and Consolidations & Reporting teams and participate in various consolidated reporting reviews as part of the month-end and quarter-end processes.

In this role, typical responsibilities will include:
  • Execution of external financial reporting in accordance with IFRS, SEC and Swiss SIX regulations, including quarterly interim financial reports and year-end annual report
  • Ownership of cross-functional earnings calendar, including advance scheduling of key reviews, project management oversight throughout the execution of the earnings cycle, and management of individual team member assignments to balance workloads and ensure continues team member development
  • Depending on financial reporting disclosure assignments, prepare or review the disclosure, corroborative back up, and associated disclosure checklist section. Footnotes most likely to be prepared by the Director, External Financial Reporting include: Significant Transactions, Selected Accounting Policies (in coordination with Technical Accounting), Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets, Acquisitions, and Taxes (in coordination with Global Tax)
  • Ownership of quarterly SOX 302 process, including coordination of disclosure matters from each function / region and drafting of the Disclosure Review Committee ("DRC") Report
  • Global subject matter expert for share-based compensation accounting, including review of month-end review workpapers prepared by the External Financial Reporting Manager, maintenance of the associated accounting policy, and training to upskill the organization as needed
  • Accountability for the quarterly earnings per share model which is prepared by the External Financial Reporting Manager
  • Liaise with Alcon's Social Impact and Sustainability ("SIS") team to assess ESG reporting requirements and in turn, coordinate execution of items to be owned by the FRA team
  • Provide centralized project management for statutory financial reporting across geographies, including interaction with regional Heads of FRA, providing insights for ad hoc inquiries from reporting units, and maintaining the team's training materials related to statutory financial reporting
  • Participation in Global FRA US GAAP conversion project, including review of work papers prepared by dedicated US GAAP project team members for assigned areas (i.e., conversion adjustment entries related to share-based compensation; draft disclosures for equivalent IFRS reporting areas)
  • Regular interaction with cross-functional colleagues to coordinate key inputs needed for external reporting (e.g., Tax, manufacturing, Treasury, Finance)
  • Performance of ad hoc research on technical accounting matters and SEC / IFRS disclosure requirements and keep current on new reporting requirements or trends
  • Adherence to and communication of accounting and auditing policies and procedures and internal controls
  • May prepare written technical accounting and financial reporting position papers for review
What you'll bring to Alcon:
  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +18 yrs; Assoc.+14 yrs; M.S.+7 yrs; PhD+3 yrs)
  • Ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English
  • 10 Years of Relevant Experience
Preferred qualifications:
  • Degree in Accounting and/or Finance
  • CPA Certification/Chartered Accountant
  • Accounting experience - Public and Industry
  • Comprehensive knowledge of IFRS (GAAP), accounting and financial reporting requirements
  • Strong analytical skills
