Engineering Manager, Payments Risk Tooling

United States

Airbnb was born in 2007 when two Hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 4 million Hosts who have welcomed more than 1 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, Hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.

The Community You Will Join:

Payments is key for any healthy marketplace, and is just as central to our product at Airbnb. The Payments org at Airbnb is responsible for everything related to settling money in Airbnb’s global marketplace - moving billions of dollars, in 191 countries, across 75 currencies, through a complex ecosystem of payments partners. We build technology that powers Airbnb’s massive daily transaction volume to collect payments from guests, distribute payouts to hosts and everything in between. Our goal is to make the Payment experience on Airbnb as delightful, magical, intuitive, and easy as possible.

The Payment Risk Tooling team builds tools that empower the Payment Risk team with agility and flexibility to investigate, prevent, and mitigate against financial losses when facilitating payment transactions- with the ultimate goal of enabling positive travel experience for our Guests and Hosts. Through our tooling, risk ops and analyst roles will evolve to support seamless coordination across business functions.

The Difference You Will Make:

As an Engineering Manager in the Payments Risk Tooling org, you will be responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of tools and systems designed to mitigate payment risks within our organization. Your role will involve collaborating with Product Management and cross-functional teams to identify opportunities and develop strategies to automate tooling for agents and the engineering community while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Risk Tooling is in a nascent stage, so we have the opportunity to mature the experience offered by adding more capabilities such as SIMI tools, Advanced Risk Trends, Signal & Feature explorer, Friction & Model Management, and Graph & Analytics Tools. You will also be responsible for migrating existing tools to a newer tech stack and staying updated on industry best practices.

Engineering Managers are comfortable operating in ambiguity. They enable their team to work backwards from highly ambiguous starting points by leveraging data, running experiments, and following a structured approach to build business use cases that influence a diverse team of experts across engineering, data science, finance, compliance, legal, and business. You will navigate the team through technical and regulatory constraints while simultaneously distilling and communicating complex subject matter to payments and non-payments stakeholders. You will have to be passionate about building a high performing team and creating a unique culture.

Aligned with our company mission, Belong Anywhere, we value the importance of diversity and belonging in the workplace, and that's why we commit to not discriminating on basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

A Typical Day:

  • Work closely with your stakeholders to shape the technical strategy and drive alignment on the direction of the team
  • Conduct daily stand-ups to get an accurate view of your team’s output, strengthen team communication, and support engineers to do their tasks without any friction
  • Proactively share context with the team, help the team connect the dots of their work with broader company initiatives
  • Collaborate with the team in India and manage the on-call support effectively- serving the agent community in a timely manner is essential
  • Connect with stakeholders regularly and bring in alignment for smooth execution

Your Expertise:

  • 3-5+ years of engineering management experience, with 9+ years of industry experience with a BS/Masters or 6+ years of industry experience with a PhD
  • Experienced building payments or relevant systems
  • Strong coding abilities and experience with architectural patterns of large, high-scale applications.
  • Experience architecting, building, and maintaining highly available services in a large service-oriented architecture (SOA).
