Today Amsterdam, Netherlands

Software Engineer (Java) - Payments-Billing

The Payments-Billing domain is the heartbeat of Adyen's financial operations, managing the critical processes of transaction processing, pricing, and customer billing. As a Java Software Engineer, you will join a new, talented team responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining a highly scalable and robust payments-billing system. Your work will directly impact Adyen's foundational services, building the applications that ensure accurate and efficient financial flows for our global customers. You'll be working at the heart of Adyen, weaving intricate connections between our most critical systems.

What you’ll do

  • Design and Develop Robust Systems: You will be responsible for the full development lifecycle—from software design and implementation to testing and deployment. You'll build and maintain critical Java-based services that handle high-volume financial transactions with a focus on performance, reliability, and security.
  • Collaborate and Deliver: Work within a cross-functional team, partnering with product managers, other engineers, and stakeholders to define, prioritize, and deliver scalable payments and billing features.
  • Maintain and Optimize: Identify and improve parts of the platform to make it more robust and scalable. You'll be focused on ensuring system quality, conducting code reviews, and championing best practices around Java development, testing methodologies, and observability for production systems.
  • Take Ownership: You’ll be entrusted with significant ownership, bringing new functionality live that impacts millions of businesses and shoppers. You'll have the autonomy to make decisions and the responsibility to see them through.
  • Learn and Grow: Join a team that fosters a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence. You'll have opportunities to dive deep into complex financial systems and learn from experienced engineers.

Who you are

  • Experienced Java Developer: You have a solid background in Core Java development and related ecosystems (e.g., Kafka, webservices, microservices, queuing frameworks, REST APIs, Cassandra, and Temporal). You've worked on high-throughput, highly reliable services and are comfortable with the challenges of a critical financial domain.
  • Execution-Focused: You have a pragmatic mindset, balancing speed with quality and impact. You're proactive, take ownership, and strive for excellence from both a technical and a product perspective.
  • Problem-Solver: You're a dynamic self-starter with a natural curiosity to question the "why." You enjoy tackling complex problems and are not afraid to challenge the status quo to find the best solutions.
  • Collaborative Team Player: You have excellent communication skills and are comfortable explaining complex technical concepts. You know how to work effectively with others, give and receive constructive feedback, and collaborate across teams and time zones.
