A Bronx NFP is looking for a COntroller to come in on a temp to perm basis. They will be reporting to the Chief Financial Officer , the Controller is responsible for the day-to-day accounting for the Organization's financial transactions, as well as for developing, implementing, and ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures consistent with generally accepted accounting principles. The Controller is responsible for maintaining and continuously improving the system of financial controls, including general accounting, investment accounting, tax compliance and planning, budgeting, banking, payroll, and benefits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. General Accounting and Reporting

  • Develop, administer, and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting policies and procedures
  • Prepare interim financial statements
  • Maintain general ledger, subsidiary ledgers and other accounting records needed for preparation of the financial statements and other required financial data, post journal entries
  • Update chart of accounts, vendor listing and accounting system reports
  • Reconcile financial information from subsidiary applications to general ledger
  • Collect supporting documents for payment of vendor invoices and grants
  • Deposit cash receipts, post to general ledger, and update cash receipts journal
  • Participate in professional accounting societies; maintain current relevant knowledge of GAAP
  • Oversee a staff of 3 accountants and bookkeepers

2. Audit, Tax Compliance
  • Assist in preparation of tax return questionnaires and review of returns prepared by the auditors
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory requirements affecting Organizations
  • Prepare IRS Forms 1099 and 1096
  • Prepare audit schedules, financial statements, and footnotes for the Organization's year-end financial statement audit; provide support to auditors during the annual audit

3. Budget
  • Work with the CFO to prepare annual capital and operating budgets; assist in calculation of cash flow projections
  • Perform periodic review of budget vs. actual with variance analyses
  • Track disbursements to ensure minimum distribution requirements are met

4. Banking
  • Ensure compliance with management of internal banking policies and procedures
  • Promptly reconcile all monthly bank statements, including custodian cash
  • Initiate interbank bank transfers as necessary


5. Payroll and Benefits Processing
  • Process semi-monthly payroll
  • Maintain and report on employee personal time off
  • Reconcile books/records to IRS Form 5500
  • Calculate and manage Section 403(b) transfers
  • Coordinating with CFO, administer and process employee benefit paperwork
  • Reconcile quarterly payroll tax returns to accounting books/records


6. Government grants
  • Manage approximately $60 million in government funding
  • Prepare and oversee monthly and quarterly claims to grantors
  • Oversee cost allocation plan

7. Property Management
  • Oversee the general ledgers of several housing partnerships
  • Review the monthly billing to tenants and third-party payors
  • Review the intercompany charges including allocated salaries, management and development fees between the Organization and the Housing Partnerships

8. Other
  • In conjunction with Office Manager and outsourced IT vendor, ensure up-to-date inventory of all computer and computer-related equipment, cellphones, and iPads
  • Maintain inventory of offsite Organization records; and update inventory of contracts
  • Assist CFO in the analysis and review of grantee financial statements
  • Complete industry surveys

Qualifications
  • General : Must have a dedication to the tax-exempt sector, ability to exercise discretion, work independently, take initiative, meet multiple and competing deadlines, participate as an effective team member, and follow tasks through to completion
  • Experience :
    • 6-10 years related accounting experience in not-for-profit organization or public accounting; 2-5 years in a leadership/controller position required
    • Knowledge of not-for profit GAAP is required
    • Have led an audit, with responsibility for document support/audit preparation required
    • Exposure to real estate tax assessment and grieving process preferred
    • Exposure to housing partnership accounting a plus
    • Exposure to program/subgrant accounting and intercompany allocations preferred
  • Education : Bachelor's degree in Accounting required. C.P.A. or on C.P.A track preferred
  • Technology skills :
    • Experience using a computerized accounting system, solid knowledge of MS Office applications
    • Financial Edge and Excel proficiency a must
  • Organizational skills : Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Able to prioritize work effectively and adjust to multiple demands
  • Communication skills : Strong interpersonal, verbal and written skills
