How I Landed a Job in Recruiting at an Innovative Company

Our mission here at The Muse is simple: to help you find your dream job. So, there’s nothing we love more than hearing about it when you do!

Today, we chatted with Emily Hall, a senior talent acquisition specialist at DexYP. She was looking for a job that would challenge her and help her grow, and working at DexYP has checked all those boxes, plus some.

Read below to learn more about her story, then check out DexYP’s offices and see how you can land a great new gig of your own.

Tell us about yourself!

I’ve been in Human Resources and Client Support for eight years, focusing specifically on corporate recruitment for the past four years.

In college, I majored in psychology, and I’ve been blessed to find a career that allows me to utilize that knowledge. I love being able to incorporate what I’ve learned about reading individuals and understanding peoples’ drives and motivators into my job. I also absolutely love being able to hear the joy in people’s voices when they learn we’re extending an offer—it’s a total thrill!

What do you do as a senior talent acquisition specialist?

I get to work very closely with our sales managers to find them the best sales employees to support existing and new clients. I search various outlets like Indeed and LinkedIn for talented individuals, as well as screen applicants that have applied for our roles directly. I also interview qualified candidates and act as a liaison between the candidate and hiring managers as we move people through the screening, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding processes.

What were you doing before you landed your new job?

I was a corporate recruiter for a smaller company in Dallas within the AV/VTC (Audio Video/ Video Tele-Conferencing) and collaborative communications industry.

What were you looking for in a job?

I was looking to be challenged, as well as for opportunities for growth and development, a supportive team, and the chance to work with a group of people that truly believed in and enjoyed what they were doing.

What’s something most people would find surprising about working at DexYP?

We recently acquired our greatest competitor, Yellow Pages, so there’s a lot of name recognition of that company in connection with DexYP. After the sale, a lot of people assume that we are now the Yellow Pages, operating solely within the world of print phone book ads, which isn’t entirely accurate. We’re experiencing an incredibly exciting time for growth and innovation—we do still keep our hand in print marketing, but focus more heavily on innovative digital marketing solutions.

At DexYP, our passion is saving the small, local businesses by partnering with them to be competitive in their regional marketplaces. We do this by developing innovative solutions and putting passionate, hardworking sales reps and support specialists into working relationships with our wonderful clients. We literally put marketing solutions into the palm of the business owners’ hands.

What’s your favorite part so far about working at DexYP?

The people—everyone I’ve come into contact with has been energized and excited to be a part of DexYP, our growth, and serving and saving the country’s small- to medium-sized businesses. There’s a sense of comradery between employees across all departments and regions that just can’t be beat—I truly look forward to being in the office every week!

Is there anything from The Muse that helped you out in your job hunt?

I found that a company’s culture can truly be exemplified on The Muse. You get a much stronger and more authentic feel for what it’s really like to work within a company from The Muse profiles than you do on other professional sites.

The Muse profiles also allowed me to “meet” various employees before going to interview with them, and this made me even more excited about the opportunity.

What advice would you have for someone who wants a job like yours?

Think outside of the box and get creative. Look at roles that are within your wheelhouse but may be in an entirely new industry, or look for a different role within your current industry.

It might sound like a cliché or pre-packaged answer, but you really have to just be yourself, and remain true to who you are while going through the job search and application process. Simply allowing your strengths and experience to shine through naturally will go a long way in an interview.

Here at The Muse, we partner with a lot of great companies to bring you insider looks at their offices and awesome job listings. And when it comes to articles like this, these Muse-worthy brands are featured not because they want to be included, but because their culture, policies, and employee feedback showed us that they deserve to be.
