How I Applied to a Role That Didn't Exist—and Landed My Dream Job!

Our mission here at The Muse is simple: to help you find your dream job. So, there’s nothing we love more than hearing about it when you do!

Today we chatted with Sabrina Grissom, who recently landed a job as the first in-house recruiter at Persado. She’ll be using her six years of experience in sales and recruiting to help awesome people find their dream jobs at this tech-marketing company.

Read below to learn more about Grissom’s story, then check out Persado’s offices and see how you can land a great new gig of your own.

What were you looking for in a job?

Prior to working at Persado, I had been Senior Recruiter for another tech startup in the healthcare space, and then left to get some agency experience after noticing a lot of companies I was interested in required that. It was a valuable learning experience, but I ultimately decided agency life was not for me. So, I took a month off of work, did some consulting while becoming an amateur sommelier, and then dove into finding my next dream company!

I was looking for a very small company, a product I believed in, and a place I could help grow a team exponentially. It was important to me to focus on one company (as opposed to an agency-type situation) so I could give recruiting that personal touch I think it requires. As a recruiter, you are essentially the face of the company to candidates—you’re the person they connect with the most and therefore are representative of the company. I wanted to represent my brand and only my brand.

What attracted you to Persado when you found it on The Muse?

The product at Persado seemed really intriguing—the idea of using technology to help marketers make smarter copy decisions was genius.

The people also seemed really smart. It is important for me to surround myself with others who are smarter than me. And not only were they smart, but they seemed to be truly enjoying their jobs!

When I initially toured the office I was impressed with the startup feel and positive vibe around the office. Anyone who has worked in an environment that was anything but that will agree how important this is when choosing your next career move.

What's your favorite part so far about working at this company?

My suspicions were true: The people here really are great, whether we’re working together or having fun together!

Persado has a very collaborative environment and everyone brings something to the table to accomplish the short- and long-term goals of the company. You feel like your opinion is valued, which is really hard to find when you’re not quite at that executive level.

But we also actually enjoy being together! In addition to regular events like happy hours, last week we had an awesome company-wide offsite in California. We were able to meet the teams in our Greece and San Francisco offices.

How did you use The Muse to help you in your job search?

The Muse made it super easy to view a bunch of companies that were hiring and apply for them directly through the site. I loved that as a candidate I could view pictures of the office and team members. It really made what is usually a stressful experience a positive and seamless one.

What advice would you have for someone who wants a job like yours?

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend everyone do this, but when I applied to Persado they actually didn’t have my role open online. But since I was really interested in the company, I applied for a lower level job so I could get my resume in front of them. It worked out!

But I think the best advice for anyone is to broaden your search initially. Then as you progress in the interview process and start to learn more about the companies that are interviewing you, you can start to narrow down the ones you don’t want. You will find what’s right for you!
