Your New Role

Discovery Global is seeking a seasoned intellectual property attorney to join our global legal organization as Vice President, Legal, IP (Trademark & Brand Protection). In this strategic leadership role, you will oversee global trademark strategy, brand protection, and IP counseling across an expansive portfolio of iconic Discovery Global brands and content. This position reports directly to the SVP, Legal, Head of Global IP and Legal Operations and will be based in Atlanta, Georgia or Silver Spring, Maryland.

As a senior member of the Intellectual Property team, you will serve as a key advisor to executive and business partners across the organization, providing sophisticated counsel on trademark selection, clearance, use, and protection. You will lead the development and execution of comprehensive trademark filing programs, review and analyze complex domestic and international trademark searches, and direct global prosecution efforts in coordination with foreign counsel.

You will manage a substantial global docket of trademark opposition and cancellation matters, as well as a wide range of IP-related disputes spanning trademarks, copyright, right of publicity, domain issues, online infringement, scams, and other brand protection issues. In this capacity, you will evaluate and respond to trademark and copyright claims, negotiate settlements and coexistence agreements, and support proactive enforcement strategies to protect Discovery Global's portfolio.

As the VP, you will also oversee key departmental functions, including trademark search and docketing operations, brand protection workflows, domain name administration, and copyright management. You will collaborate closely with internal stakeholders on IP licensing matters-drafting and negotiating trademark and related IP agreements-and will support corporate development and M&A teams with IP expertise on acquisitions and divestitures.

In addition to providing cross-functional counsel on a wide range of IP issues, you will serve as the organization's subject matter expert on trademark, copyright, and related rights in support of the company's Litigation function. You will also lead special projects and strategic initiatives at the direction of the SVP, Head of Global IP, helping drive Discovery Global's overall IP strategy forward in a dynamic global marketplace.

This role provides a unique opportunity to shape global brand protection strategy, steward a diverse and high-visibility trademark portfolio, and partner across the business to mitigate risk and enable innovation.

Your Role Accountabilities

  • Provide substantive legal guidance and counsel for business executives regarding the selection and proper use of trademarks and brands.
  • Review and analyze complex domestic and international trademark searches to determine trademark use and registration availability.
  • Develop and manage trademark filing programs.
  • Manage a complex docket of trademark opposition and cancellation actions and other IP related disputes involving trademark, copyright and related forms of IP.
  • Prosecute domestic trademark applications and partner with foreign counsel on prosecuting international filings.
  • Manage and advise on a robust docket of disputes, infringements and pre-litigation matters involving Discovery Global brands and content.
  • Manage an assortment of brand protection and antipiracy related matters including counterfeiting related issues, infringing derivative uses, domain issues, online infringement, scams, etc.
  • Review, evaluate and respond to trademark, copyright and related IP claims.
  • Negotiate with third parties regarding settlements of trademark and related claims, including but not limited to coexistence agreements.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders on IP licensing matters, including drafting trademark and related IP licensing agreements
  • Support corporate development and M&A functions with IP support related to acquisitions and divestitures
  • Advise on IP issues related to copyright, right of publicity, etc.
  • Assist on special projects with intellectual property issues at the direction of the SVP, Head of Global IP.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert across trademark, copyright and related matters in support of company's Litigation function.
  • Provide attorney oversight of trademark search and docketing functions within department.
  • Provide attorney oversight of brand protection, domain name, and copyright administration functions within department.

Qualifications & Experience
  • 10+ years experience in the practice of trademark/copyright law
  • Significant experience with all forms of brand protection/ antipiracy matters
  • Prior experience in media and entertainment strongly preferred
  • Experience managing a team responsible for a dynamic and fast-paced portfolio of work
  • JD from accredited US law school
  • Active license to practice law in state
  • Practical, nuanced judgment in making decisions and recommendations regarding rights
  • Must possess excellent legal skills, including clear and concise oral and written communication skills, and superior ability to handle multiple tasks with competing priorities
  • Strong background in intellectual property law and trademark law
  • Ability to conceptualize and articulate practical and creative solutions to meet business needs and legal requirements.
  • Ability to spot and analyze complex issues and devise practical strategies and solutions.
  • Extensive experience counseling clients at all levels, and proven ability to become a trusted advisor regarding IP issues.
  • Must be able to prepare, negotiate, and interpret agreements and other legal documents.
  • Must be able to research legal questions and be able to clearly present complex legal advice in fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent people management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with senior management
  • Must be able to work as a part of a team
  • Must be able to organize and schedule work effectively
  • Must be able to work well under time constraints
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks with changing priorities
