The CNN Revenue, Growth, and New Business groupis looking for a Principal Software Engineerto lead architecture and engineering excellence and mentor promising engineers.
This role will support three missions at CNN.
- Revenue - build and deliver tools and features supporting our advertising experiences and Underscored, our product recommendation and review site
- Growth - build and deliver features and services which optimize our subscription business, focusing on DTC acquisition and retention and associated marketing technologies
- New Business - build and deliver differentiated, standalone lifestyle products that can enrich our users' lives, extend CNN's daily relevance to our audience, and drive the long-term success of CNN's subscription business.
In this role, you will report to the Sr. Director, Revenue, Growth, and New Business, and collaborate closely with executive leadership at CNN and peers across the engineering organization. You will drive engineering excellence and lead architecture decision-making across all three of these teams. You will work closely with a highly motivated team of engineers to implement our technical strategy and improve the quality, reliability, and usefulness of our services.
What you'll do:
- Architect our customer platform- define, design, and evolve a scalable and easy-to-use collection of tools and capabilities for reaching our customers at any point in their news journey
- Be a partner in our engineering strategy- work closely with the Sr. Director and your peers to define and implement long-term technical strategy
- Engineering excellence- establish and evangelize engineering practices internal to this group and in collaboration across our org which improve the reliability and quality of everything we build
- Engage with leadership and with our teams- Present architectural vision, roadmaps, and trade-offs to executive stakeholders and to our engineering teams, influencing key decisions and ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Grow our engineering skillset- Mentor promising engineers, and work with all teams to build good engineering habits. Be thoughtful and outcome-oriented in thinking about how to lead adoption of AI-assisted development practices in our teams.
- Stay abreast of industry trends- keep up with the latest developments in identity and commerce providers, customer journey tools, and advertising and marketing technology, and work to both bring in the best practices from outside our org
Your toolbox:
- Education- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent industry experience
- Experience- 15+ years in software engineering, with at least 5+ years focused on client / front-end engineering on the web, and at least 2+ years in a role where you defined architecture and best practices.
- High-Performance Mindset- Thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment with a focus on quickly delivering customer value over delivering a perfect solution.
- Strong Communication Skills- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders across the company.
- Teacher Leader- Your leadership style is rooted in lifting up others. You love to share your knowledge and experience with others.
- Experience at Scale- You've worked in an environment where many teams are contributing to a common set of code and tools, and where tens or hundreds of millions of customers are on the other side of that deploy. You bring experience and best practices for solving problems in this environment.
- Client-focused but Backend-experienced- Most of our teams are working in our clients, but all collaborate with partners building backends tools and services. You guide good architectural decision-making taking the full stack into consideration.
- Cloud Expertise- You have deployed and operated systems in AWS (preferred), GCP, or Azure.
