Your New Role...
The CNN Photojournalist captures news events to the highest ethical, aesthetic, editorial, and technical standards using the latest electronic news gathering and transmission technologies. This role requires skilful handling of video photography, audio, video editing, lighting and logistics.
They must be able to capture and deliver a wide array of news and sometimes feature based stories across all our platforms from TV, Digital to social.
Your Role Accountabilities...
Visual Content Production
- You will be proficient in all aspects of electronic news gathering including cameras, lighting, sound, drones, video editing and transmission and delivery methods.
- Collaborating with reporters, producers, video editors and desk personnel as well as working independently, you will be able to creatively tell visual stories that are relevant and compelling to our audience across all platforms.
- You will be able to cover all aspects of news shooting: b-roll, interview set ups, and live shots as well as set up and operate live equipment using satellite, Digital Newsgathering/Live and be versed in File transfer protocol capabilities.
- Troubleshoots quickly and effectively in the field.
- Ability to move footage through file transfer protocol (FTP) and other delivery methods, edit video and ensure full and rich metadata for CNN's digital library.
Editorial Contribution
- With a keen news awareness for the stories to which you are assigned you will utilise your editorial, technical and productions skills to produce first class content for our multiplatform network.
- You will be expected to be an editorial contributor to the team on which you are working to report out relevant content and information to the network.
- You will have the opportunity to take the initiative to pitch, produce, and creatively tell relevant stories subject to formal approval process.
- A key part of this role is being able to conceptualise ideas with reporters and producers to providing feedback to help shape the visual angle of our stories.
Gear maintenance
- You will be responsible for maintaining all technical gear including crew vehicles where applicable and work with the appropriate departments to ensure all equipment is up to date and in working order to ensure no gaps in production.
Travel
- You will be expected to travel to various news events often with little to no advance notice which may also involve hostile environments.
- As part of this you will be responsible for gathering, packing, and transporting gear being mindful of unnecessary excess baggage for budgetary savings and as well as arranging logistics including airfare, rental vehicle, and lodging where required.
Administrative
- You will be responsible for accounting any expenses you make on corporate credit cards and submitting them in a timely manner per company guidelines.
- You will be responsible where required in ensuring you have the appropriate visa / credentials for deployment.
- Be aware and ensure you stay abreast of company provided safety and security courses.

Qualifications & Experience...
- Proven experience in electronic newsgathering (ENG) and Field work.
- Proven experience in Video Editing with strong news editing skills.
- You will be a self-starting, editorially savvy individual who produces high quality work under pressure and at times in high stress environments,
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt, persevere, and overcome challenges while maintaining a positive attitude, as well as being able to quickly analyse situations and make independent decisions.
- Be available 24/7 for breaking news and have flexibility in your schedule to meet news demands which may require you to travel for extensive periods at a time including to potentially hostile environments.
- The capacity to work individually or collaborate as a member of a team is key ensuring you engage operationally, logistically, and editorially on any story you are working on.
- Familiarity with field production and cameras including electronic newsgathering (ENG) and large sensor and Video formats.
- Knowledge of Internet protocol (IP) /Streaming Transmission Systems and file transfer protocol (FTP) systems; Premiere Pro edit software; Apple Mac operating system; Adobe After Effects, and Photoshop software.
- A broad understanding of technology including servers and Media asset managers is essential.
- Have a working knowledge with Satellite trucks, Satellite communications, broadband, bonded cel and other feed technologies and delivery methods.
- Excellent written and verbal English, and experience working to style guide.
- Possess a valid Passport and Driver's licence.
Hybrid Working - This role is advertised as a Hybrid work model, that combines remote and in-office work, following our current company policy and to be agreed with your Line Manager. Subject to any applicable laws, WBD / your Line Manager reserves the right to change this working agreement where this is essential to business needs and upon reasonable notice to you.
