Avalanche Software, a division of Warner Bros. Games Inc., is seeking a Lead Writer for our Story team creating the next generation of immersive, narrative-driven experiences.

We are looking for an exceptional storyteller, creative leader, and collaborative partner with extensive experience writing for games and leading narrative teams. This role requires both creative excellence and strong people leadership. The Lead will partner closely with the Game Director and multidisciplinary teams across the studio to develop compelling stories, memorable characters, and world-class player experiences.

The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in game narrative, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to lead and mentor a diverse team of writers while fostering strong relationships across the studio.

The Daily

  • Lead the writing team in developing compelling narratives, memorable characters, rich world-building, and engaging in-game content.
  • Partner closely with the Game Director to define and execute the narrative vision of the game.
  • • Understand the strengths, interests, and development needs of individual writers and allocate resources appropriately across the project.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and constructive feedback to writers, helping elevate the quality and consistency of the team's work.
  • Establish and uphold narrative standards, tone, voice, and storytelling principles across the project.
  • Write and edit dialogue, cinematics, lore, quests, character barks, and on-screen text.
  • Review and edit the work of other writers to ensure narrative consistency and quality.
  • Collaborate closely with design, art, cinematics, audio, mission, combat, production, marketing, QA, and executive teams.
  • Identify and resolve communication challenges and cross-disciplinary issues, strengthening collaboration throughout the studio.
  • Participate in playtests and regularly review game builds to evaluate the narrative experience from the player's perspective.
  • Participate in motion capture and voice-over sessions as necessary.
  • Oversee the daily work of assigned staff and foster a safe, inclusive, and highly collaborative team culture.

The Essentials

  • Minimum of 8 years of professional game writing experience, including experience on large-scale titles.
  • At least 1 year in a leadership role leading narrative teams and mentoring writers.
  • Proven experience writing narrative content for games, including dialogue, character development, and world-building.
  • Deep understanding of narrative design principles and interactive storytelling.
  • Excellent writing, editing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Experience working with established IPs and franchise partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines and build strong working relationships throughout a studio.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of the game development process from concept through ship.
  • Strong belief in a collaborative, team-first approach to development.


The Nice to Haves

  • Experience leading narrative development on critically acclaimed or commercially successful titles.
  • Experience with branching narrative tools and scripting systems such as Articy or similar narrative pipelines.
  • Experience directing or participating in voice-over and performance capture sessions.
  • Experience hiring, developing, and growing writing teams.
  • Passion for games and a deep understanding of emotionally resonant player experiences.
