Director of Engineering (Citymapper)

We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead and grow our high-impact Backend Data teams powering the core data infrastructure and backend systems at the heart of Citymapper and Via’s TransitTech platform. You’ll oversee the reliability, scalability and performance of backend services that handle real-time transport data, user data and critical platform features used by millions of users worldwide.
In this role, you’ll set technical direction, drive architectural decisions, and champion best practices. You’ll work closely with product and engineering leaders to deliver robust solutions, and you’ll be responsible for attracting, developing and mentoring exceptional backend engineers.

 What You’ll Do:

  • Lead and execute on a long term vision and strategy for the Citymapper backend teams
  • Drive the technical direction and roadmap, working closely with product leadership to prioritize initiatives and deliver on business objectives
  • Coach, support and provide feedback for your direct reports to positively impact their career development and growth
  • Act as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and thought leadership to teams within Citymapper and Via
  • Improve engineering processes and practices
  • Create a culture of excellence, innovation, and inclusion

Who You Are:

  • 10+ years of experience in managing and leading backend teams—including evaluating technologies, work methods, architecture and design
  • Minimum of 8 years of solid experience building complex backend projects and/or data pipelines
  • BSc in Computer Science, Mathematics, or any related degree
  • An all-around team player and self-motivated individual
  • Passion for code craftsmanship
  • Experience working on high-scale, production-grade projects
  • A strong leader with the ability to inspire, motivate, and mentor team members to achieve their full potential
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
